This document (EN 17065:2018) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 256 “Railway
applications”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by December 2018, and conflicting national standards
shall be withdrawn at the latest by December 2018.

1 Scope
This document specifies test methods and acceptance criteria for a brake system used in passenger
coaches including driving trailers for use in general operation.
This document is applicable to all new passenger coaches including driving trailers, which are designed
for general operation in the European conventional rail system network in accordance with EN 14198.
This document does not cover the homologation tests of any brake component.

5 Requirements on the test execution
5.1 Test specification
The tests defined in this document shall be carried out in accordance with Annex A and the results shall
be used to verify whether the brake system of the passenger coach complies with the requirements of
EN 14198 and the other specified requirements.
This document defines the static and dynamic tests during type and routine test phases. The type tests
shall be performed by a testing institute. There are type and routine tests:

— with a single vehicle;
— with a train set to check the required functions on the train level.
The tests are described in Clause 6. An overview of all tests and their determination as type test and/or
routine test is given in Table A.1 and Table A.2. This list of tests shall only be considered as a basis for
setting up the dedicated test specification for a given passenger coach.
5.2 Documentation
As a minimum, it shall be possible, whilst using the documentation of both the test and the vehicle, to
determine the relationship with the following when considering any particular measurement or check:
— brake mode and method of control;
— software versions of all brake-relevant components (WSP systems, brake modules, etc.);
— load conditions;
— type and batch numbers of the friction materials (brake blocks, brake pads, etc.) and results of
bench tests in dry and wet conditions unless the friction materials are approved for general
operation;
— brake calculation in accordance with EN 14531-1 or EN 14531-2;
— diameter of wheels.
5.3 Test conditions
5.3.1 Test bench and test equipment
The control of the BP pressure shall be done by a driver’s brake valve or an equivalent device, which
can control the BP pressure as required.
5.3.2 Weather conditions
Regarding the weather conditions, the tests shall be performed:
— in accordance with EN 15595 in case of tests of WSP,
— for all other tests in accordance with prEN 16834.
5.3.3 Energy supply
Each test shall start from the following pressure values (operating pressure for the MRP, normal
working pressure for the BP):
— a pressure in the range of 6 bar ≤ p ≤ 10 bar;

— p = (5 ± 0,05) bar.

The voltage of the battery for the supply of brake devices and the WSP shall be in the range of
U = U ± 20 % during the tests.

For WSP tests, the installation of an additional reservoir to feed the auxiliary reservoir is recommended.

5.3.4 Load conditions
All static tests shall be performed under minimum load. Additionally, the test specified in 6.3.5 shall be
performed by simulation in different load conditions. Tests of WSP shall be performed in accordance
with EN 15595.
The slip tests shall be performed in accordance with prEN 16834.
5.4 Test report
The test report of type test shall be elaborated by the testing institute.
If routine test is not performed by a testing institute, the report of routine test shall at least include:
— date and location of the test;
— identification and type of the tested vehicle;
— identification of brake equipment (type, part number and serial numbers of relevant components);
— test results and the associated records. Each record shall include:
— date;
— identification and type of the tested vehicle;
— name of the test performed and reference paragraph in the test specification;
— name and scale for all the recorded parameters;
— results;
— identification of the different charts;
— signature of the responsible person;
— table listing all the adjustable parameter settings of the tests (choke diameters, software
configuration, etc.);
— conclusion of the tests.
6 Tests
6.1 Check of the brake equipment
The markings and the brake equipment shall correspond to the passenger coach documentation
(technical description, type drawing, pneumatic scheme, parts list, etc.).
The following external and internal markings shall be checked:
— serial number of the tested vehicle;
— vehicle number (see EN 15877-2:2013, 4.5.2);
— table of weights (see EN 15877-2:2013, 4.5.4.1);
— type of brake (see EN 15877-2:2013, 4.5.9);

— calculated brake weights (see EN 15877-2:2013, 4.5.10);
— passenger alarm device (see EN 16334);
— end cocks (see EN 14601).
The following brake equipment, if part of the system, shall be checked for consistence with the vehicle's
documentation regarding type, part number and serial number or batch number where applicable. For
electronic devices that run a software, the software version shall be listed. The information shall be
recorded for:
— distributor valve(s);
— relay valve(s);
— air reservoir(s);
— emergency brake device(s);
— friction material (brake pads and/or brake blocks);
— brake discs;
— WSP system;
— MTB;
— EP assist;
— brake pipe pressure control system.
The conformity of used components with relevant vehicle documentation shall be checked.
Furthermore, the following shall be checked:
— the function of all cut-off, isolating and change-over devices;
— position of end cocks, latching of both open and closed position and movability of the handle;
— installation of brake couplings;
— the integration of mechanical part of brake into the bogie (visual inspection);
— the position of brake pads relative to the brake discs and/or brake blocks to the wheels;
— the continuity of the BP and of the MRP;
— the continuity and couplings of the electrical connections;
— the current wheel diameter(s).
The markings and the brake equipment of the passenger coach are satisfactory when corresponding to
related documentation (type plan, pneumatic and electric schemes, etc.). The installation of the brake
system parts in the vehicle (e.g. installation position, movements and clearances of flexible connections,
etc. and safety features as defined in the installation documentation) shall be verified.

6.2 Test of tightness of pneumatic system
6.2.1 Tightness when the brake is isolated
The brake is isolated. The auxiliary devices supplied by the MRP shall be connected, but not in
operation during the test sequence. All end cocks are open and blind brake coupling shall be connected
(except the supply side).
The MRP is filled to the operating pressure (see 5.3.3).
When the pressure in the MRP has stabilized, the MRP of the tested coach shall be isolated by closing of
the supply input. Tightness of the MRP shall be checked for 3 min.
Vent the MRP and connect the supply to the BP. Fill the BP to the normal working pressure (see 5.3.3).
When the pressure in the BP has stabilized, the supply of BP shall be isolated by closing the supply
input. Tightness of the BP shall be checked for 3 min.
Pass/fail criteria:
— The pressure drops shall be in the range of:
— Δp ≤ 0,2 bar / 3 min for the MRP;

— Δp ≤ 0,1 bar / 3 min for the BP.

6.2.2 Tightness when the brake is in service and released
The MRP shall be vented. The brake is in “on” position. All end cocks on the BP are open and blind brake
coupling shall be connected (except the supply side).
Fill the BP to the normal working pressure (see 5.3.3). When the pressure in the BP has stabilized, the
BP is isolated from the supply. Tightness of the BP shall be checked for minimum 3 min.
Pass/fail criteria:
— The pressure drop shall be in the range of Δp ≤ 0,1 bar / 3 min.

6.2.3 Tightness in emergency braking
After an emergency braking, there is not to occur any significant leakage affecting maximum output
pressure p

The MRP shall be vented. The pressure in BP shall be stabilized at normal working pressure (see 5.3.3).
An emergency brake application shall be initiated.
The pressure in the brake cylinders and in the auxiliary reservoir shall be checked for 10 min. The
measurement of time starts when the maximum brake cylinder pressure has stabilized.
Pass/fail criteria:
— The pressure deviations shall be in the range of:
— Δp ≤ 0,2 bar / 10 min for the auxiliary reservoir;

6.3 Tests of the pneumatic brake
6.3.1 Build up and release times and maximum brake cylinder pressures
The test shall be performed in each brake position.
The maximum brake cylinder pressure and resulting static brake force (force on brake pads and/or
brake blocks) shall be measured for each brake position as defined in brake calculation. The static brake
force shall be measured at least at one brake unit of each actuator type. Apply three emergency brake
applications and releases before measuring the static brake force.
During measurement of the release time the measuring equipment shall keep the alteration of the given
brake cylinder pilot volume V to a minimum. The additional brake cylinder pilot volume caused by the

Increase the pressure in the BP to normal working pressure (see 5.3.3). Allow time for charging and
stabilization of the pressure in the auxiliary reservoir. The MRP shall be vented.
Activate an emergency brake application. The build-up time is measured from the start of the increase
of the brake cylinder pressure to 95 % of the maximum brake cylinder pressure p . The maximum

brake cylinder pressure and resulting static brake force or brake pad force shall be measured after
stabilization.
Increase the pressure in the BP to normal working pressure (see 5.3.3). The release time is measured
from the start of the decrease of the brake cylinder pilot pressure to 0,4 bar.
Pass/fail criteria:
— The build-up times shall be in the range of:
— 3 s to 5 s in brake position P and/or R; when the variable load relay valve is used, the upper
limit is 6 s;
— 18 s to 30 s in brake position G.

The maximum brake cylinder pressures and brake forces (force on brake pads and/or brake blocks) for
each brake position are defined in brake calculation:
— The maximum values of brake cylinder pressures, which are given in the brake calculation for each

6.3.2 Brake cylinder pressure during full service brake application
The test shall be performed in each brake position.
When the pressure in BP drops by (1,6 + 0,2) bar at a gradient not slower than 0,6 bar in 6 s and not
faster than 1,8 bar in 6 s, the maximum pressure in the brake cylinder shall be achieved.
Increase the pressure in the BP to normal working pressure (see 5.3.3). The full service braking is
applied and the maximum pressure in the brake cylinder is measured after pressure stabilization.
Pass/fail criteria:
— The brake cylinder pressure shall achieve the value according to brake calculation with an accuracy
