Overview

EN 61883-5:2005 (IEC 61883-5:2004) specifies the digital-interface packet format and timing for SDL-DVCR data transmission over IEEE 1394 (FireWire). The standard defines how SDL (high-compression) digital video cassette recorder data - specifically SDL525-60 (29.97 Hz) and SDL625-50 (25.00 Hz) systems - is packetized, timestamped and carried in IEEE 1394 isochronous packets to ensure synchronized, interoperable consumer audio/video equipment.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Source packet structure: SDL-DVCR source packet = 240 bytes, divided into 3 DIF blocks (matches IEC 61834-6 SDL format).
  • Packetization rule: A source packet shall not be divided and is treated as a data block for transmission.
  • CIP header: Uses the CIP header structure defined in IEC 61883-1/2. For SDL:
    • STYPE = 00001 (when used),
    • DBS = 00111100 (data block size indication),
    • FMT = 000000, QPC = 000, SPH = 0, and FN = 00 (as specified for SDL525-60 and SDL625-50).
  • TR (transmission repetition) mapping:
    • 00 = 1x, 01 = 2x, 10 = 4x (affects number of data blocks per cycle).
  • DBC increments: DBC (data block count) increments depend on TR - step of 1 (1x), multiple of 2 (2x), multiple of 4 (4x).
  • SYT timestamping & synchronization:
    • SYT field must carry a time stamp once per video frame.
    • Transmission timing constraints: packet arrival times must respect a transmission_delay_limit = 450 µs.
  • High-speed / Hx transmission: Describes H = 1,2,4 block grouping, number of isochronous packets K per frame (K = 250 for SDL525-60, K = 300 for SDL625-50), and nominal timing formula for packet n in a frame.

Applications

  • Ensures reliable, time-aligned streaming of SDL-format video over IEEE 1394 (FireWire) links in consumer devices.
  • Used in design and testing of SDL-DVCRs, camcorders, A/V bridges and interfaces that implement SDL format recording/playback.
  • Enables interoperability between recorders, players and editing equipment that rely on precise packet timing, CIP headers and time stamps for frame-accurate transport.

Who should use this standard

  • Hardware and firmware engineers implementing IEEE 1394 isochronous transmission for SDL video.
  • Protocol architects and system integrators building consumer A/V equipment (digital VCRs, capture/playback devices).
  • Test labs and compliance teams verifying conformance to SDL packet format, CIP header fields, SYT timing and DBC/TR semantics.

Related Standards

  • IEC/EN 61883-1 - Digital interface: General (IEEE 1394 isochronous packet definitions)
  • IEC/EN 61883-2 - SD-DVCR data transmission (CIP header reference and STYPE table)
  • IEC 61834-6 - SDL format helical-scan recording system (source packet/DIF structure)
  • IEC 61834-1 - General recording specifications (informative)

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC

with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
