Overview

EN IEC 63245-1:2021 specifies requirements for spatial wireless power transfer based on multiple magnetic resonances (SWPT‑MMR) - a non‑radiative form of wireless power transfer (WPT). The standard establishes two categories of requirements: general requirements (charging procedures and charging zones) and functional requirements (system components such as transmitter coils, current control and frequency behaviour). It also defines key terms used in SWPT‑MMR systems, including charging zone, quiet zone, and null point.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope and terminology
    • Defines SWPT and SWPT‑MMR concepts and related terms (null point, quiet zone, transmitter coil).
  • General requirements
    • Requirements for the three‑dimensional charging zone where receivers may be freely positioned.
    • Rules for charging procedures to ensure consistent power delivery and management across spatial positions.
    • Concepts to manage areas of reduced field (null points) and equalized field regions (quiet zones).
  • Functional requirements
    • Transmitter coil requirements: arrangements, multiple coil use, and inter‑coil relationships to support spatial coverage.
    • Current operations: supplying current and phase control across transmitters to shape magnetic fields.
    • Frequency management: requirements for adjusting resonance frequency to maintain transfer efficiency.
  • System modelling and reference
    • Provides structure for component interactions and basic charging sequences (see IEC 63245 series for the reference model).

Applications and Who Uses This Standard

EN IEC 63245‑1:2021 is intended for organizations designing, integrating, testing or regulating spatial WPT systems:

  • Product manufacturers of wireless charging platforms for consumer electronics, IoT devices and industrial sensors.
  • System integrators deploying room‑scale or open‑space charging installations that rely on multiple resonant coils.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies validating compliance with spatial WPT behaviour and safety expectations.
  • R&D teams and standardization committees developing interoperable SWPT solutions or reference architectures.
  • Safety and compliance engineers addressing electromagnetic field distribution, null points and controlled charging procedures.

Related Standards

  • IEC 63245‑2 (Spatial WPT based on multiple magnetic resonances - Part 2: Reference model)
  • IEC TR 62869 (WPT physical layer technologies)
  • IEC 63006, IEC 63028 (related WPT and magnetic resonance standards)
  • IEC PAS 63095 and WPC Qi series (induction WPT context)

EN IEC 63245‑1:2021 provides foundational, interoperable requirements for implementing robust, spatially aware magnetic‑resonant wireless power systems - essential reading for teams building next‑generation non‑radiative charging spaces.
