Overview

SIST EN 302 454-2 V1.2.1:2016 is a harmonised European standard developed for meteorological aids, specifically radiosondes operating in the 1 668.4 MHz to 1 690 MHz frequency range. Radiosondes play a critical role in meteorology by measuring and transmitting atmospheric data, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind speed. This standard ensures that such equipment complies with the essential radio spectrum use and interference avoidance requirements detailed in Article 3.2 of Directive 2014/53/EU (Radio Equipment Directive).

By aligning with this harmonised standard, manufacturers demonstrate conformity with EU law, ensuring reliable radiocommunication and interference-free spectrum use for meteorological data collection.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Covers radiosondes within the Meteorological Aids (Met Aids) service utilizing the 1 668.4 MHz to 1 690 MHz frequency band.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Outlines requirements to fulfill Article 3.2 of Directive 2014/53/EU regarding the efficient use and support of the radio spectrum, avoiding harmful interference.
  • Technical Requirements: Specifies transmitter requirements for:
    • Frequency accuracy
    • Carrier power (conducted)
    • Effective radiated power
    • Modulation bandwidth
    • Spurious emissions
    • Frequency stability under low-voltage conditions
  • Testing Procedures: Details mandatory test conditions and methods to verify compliance with technical requirements, ensuring accurate and reproducible results.

Applications

Radiosondes are key tools in meteorological observation, weather prediction, and climate research. They provide upper-air measurement data, which is vital for:

  • Weather Forecasting: Supporting meteorological agencies in predicting weather patterns and severe weather conditions.
  • Climate Studies: Contributing long-term atmospheric data for analyzing trends and changes in climate.
  • Aviation Safety: Ensuring that pilots and air traffic controllers have access to current atmospheric conditions.
  • Scientific Research: Facilitating advanced studies in atmospheric sciences, including hydrology and geology.

Compliance with SIST EN 302 454-2 V1.2.1:2016 guarantees that radiosonde transmitters do not cause radio interference, operate efficiently within their allocated spectrum, and deliver reliable data across international meteorological networks.

Related Standards

The implementation and testing requirements of this standard are closely linked to other relevant standards and regulations:

  • SIST EN 302 454-1: Technical characteristics and test methods for radiosondes in the same frequency range.
  • Directive 2014/53/EU (Radio Equipment Directive): The key regulatory framework for all radio equipment marketed in the European Union.
  • ETSI TR 100 028-2: Guidance on measurement uncertainties for mobile radio equipment.
  • International Classifications:
    • 33.060.99 - Other equipment for radiocommunications
    • 07.060 - Geology. Meteorology. Hydrology

For manufacturers and developers of meteorological radiosondes, adhering to this standard streamlines market access in the EU, supports harmonised spectrum usage, and upholds data transmission reliability required for crucial meteorological operations.
