Overview
prEN IEC 60794-1-135:2025 - "Optical fibre cables - Part 1-135: Generic specification - Basic optical cable test procedures - Mechanical test methods - Sheave test, Method E35" defines a standardized sheave (pulley) bending test for aerial optical fibre cables. The method determines the ability of OPGW, OPPC, OPAC and ADSS cables to withstand bending over sheaves or bows under a specified load during installation. The document is part of the IEC 60794 series and replaces the earlier Method E18B in IEC 60794-1-21.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope and objectives
- Simulate bending stresses experienced during aerial installation to assess mechanical and optical performance.
- Two procedures
- Procedure 1: Single sheave bend (specified radius R and bending angle θ). Typical angles: 30° for OPGW/OPPC; 45°±15° or 70° commonly used for ADSS.
- Procedure 2: S–Z bend using three inline sheaves with fixed relative positions.
- Sample and marking
- Samples taken from a finished cable end, terminated to apply load, marked at points A and B. Distance A–B ≥ three times maximum lay length for helically stranded cables.
- Apparatus
- Tensile device (maximum error ±3 %).
- Semi-circular sheave groove sized to allow free cable motion.
- Optional optical test equipment per IEC 60793-1-46 (attenuation) and IEC 60793-1-22 (fibre elongation) when optical measurements are required.
- Procedure elements
- Apply specified tension, cycle the cable between A and B (or move sheaves relative to cable), record number of cycles and speed as specified.
- Measure attenuation before loading and after unloading (recommended rest ≥ 10 minutes unless otherwise specified).
- If required, measure cable/metallic unit diameters and calculate ovality per IEC 60794-1-1.
- Pass/fail criteria
- No visible sheath or element damage under unaided visual inspection.
- Any permanent change in attenuation, fibre strain, or ovality must not exceed values specified in the relevant product specification.
Applications
- Used by manufacturers and test laboratories to qualify aerial cables for installation stresses.
- Guides acceptance testing for telecom utilities, power utilities (OPGW/OPPC), contractors, and network planners.
- Useful during product development, type approval, and quality control to ensure cables meet installation- and service-related bending requirements.
Who should use this standard
- Cable designers and manufacturers
- Independent testing laboratories
- Telecom and power utility specification writers
- Field installation engineers and qualification teams

28 FOREWORD
29 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
30 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
31 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
32 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
33 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
34 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
35 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
36 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
37 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
38 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
39 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
40 interested IEC National Committees.
41 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
42 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
43 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
44 misinterpretation by any end user.
45 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
46 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
47 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
48 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
49 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
50 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
51 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
52 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
53 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
54 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
55 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
56 Publications.
57 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
58 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
59 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
60 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
61 IEC 60794-1-135 has been prepared by subcommittee 86A: Fibres and cables, of IEC technical
62 committee 86: Fibre optics. It is an International Standard.
63 This first edition cancels and replaces Method E18B of the second edition of IEC 60794-1-21
64 published in 2020. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
65 This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous
66 edition:
67 a) the mechanical test contained in IEC 60794-1-21: 2015+AMD1:2020 will now be individually
68 numbered in the IEC 60794-1-1xx series. Each test method is now considered to be an
69 individual document rather than part of a multi-test method compendium.
70 b) expand applicable scope, add OPPC and ADSS.
71 c) add the methods and standards of optical testing.
72 d) add the measurement and requirement of maximum allowable ovality.
73 e) add chapter “4.7 Details to be reported”.
74 The text of this International Standard is based on the following documents:
