Overview

EN 246:2021 (CEN) - "Sanitary tapware - General specifications for aerators" defines the dimensional, mechanical, hydraulic and acoustic requirements and the laboratory test procedures for sanitary tapware aerators. Applicable to aerators mounted on taps and mixing valves used in toilets, bathrooms and kitchens, the standard covers devices with and without integrated flow regulators and specifies operational limits (dynamic pressure 0.05–0.5 MPa; recommended 0.1–0.5 MPa; temperature ≤70 °C, recommended ≤65 °C). EN 246 is a type‑test standard (laboratory tests) rather than an in‑production quality control specification.

Key Topics

  • Scope & designation
    • Applies to aerators fitted downstream of the tap obturator; designation includes type (air intake or laminar), thread dimension and acoustic group.
  • Dimensions
    • Standard thread sizes and dimensional limits are given for common fittings (e.g., M22x1 female; M24x1 and M28x1 male) with specific tolerances described in clauses 7.1–7.3.
  • Hydraulic characteristics
    • Test procedures and flow tolerances for aerators with and without integrated flow regulators (see Clause 10 and Clause 11).
  • Mechanical performance
    • High‑temperature mechanical tests and pressure resistance for housings with plastic threads (Clause 10.2 and Clause 12).
  • Acoustics
    • Noise emission testing and acoustic grouping follow laboratory methods referenced to EN ISO 3822 series (Clause 10.3).
  • Endurance & pressure testing
    • Specific endurance tests for aerators with integrated flow regulators (Clause 11.2) and pressure resistance checks (Clause 12).
  • Materials & hygiene
    • Materials in contact with potable water must be safe and not affect water quality; exposed plated surfaces to comply with EN 248.
  • Marking & identification
    • Requirements for manufacturer identification, acoustic group coding and product coding to enable traceability.
  • Testing regime
    • Defined test sequence (dimensions, hydraulic, mechanical, acoustic, endurance) and note that swivels are tested only in combination with a specific aerator.

Applications

  • For manufacturers designing aerators or tapware outlets to ensure dimensional and performance compliance.
  • For test laboratories conducting type tests for hydraulic performance, acoustic classification, endurance and pressure resistance.
  • For specifiers, procurement teams and regulatory bodies selecting compliant tapware and aerators for domestic and commercial sanitary installations.
  • For plumbers and installers to verify compatibility with tap outlets (thread sizes, recommended pressure/temperature ranges).

The article is about the specifications for sanitary tapware aerators, including their dimensional, mechanical, hydraulic, and acoustic characteristics. It also provides procedures for testing these characteristics. The specifications apply to aerators used with sanitary appliances such as taps, mixing valves, and thermostatic valves in toilets, bathrooms, and kitchens. The article notes that the aerators can only be connected downstream of the obturator of the tapware and that the tests described are laboratory tests, not quality control tests during manufacture.
