Overview
kSIST FprEN 18225:2026 standardizes the composition labelling of processed feathers and down blended with other materials for filling purposes. Developed by SIST and referenced across Europe, this standard improves transparency and consumer confidence by ensuring that the composition of all blended filling materials is clearly and consistently labeled. It applies to fillings in manufactured articles that contain more than 2% non-plumage materials and clarifies the labelling requirements for both plumage and non-plumage components, following rigorous testing procedures outlined in FprEN 18226.
Key Topics
- Scope: This standard covers all filled articles containing a blend of feathers, down, and other filling materials, provided non-plumage components exceed 2% by weight but do not surpass 5% foreign matter.
- Labelling Requirements:
- Composition must be declared in descending order by mass.
- Plumage and non-plumage components must each be clearly specified, rounded to the nearest 5%.
- Down, feathers, and other plumage elements must be itemized per defined thresholds.
- Non-plumage filling content and exact type (e.g. textile fibers, polyurethane foam) must be disclosed.
- Species Declaration:
- Goose, duck, or generic waterfowl designations are detailed according to specific percentage thresholds.
- Landfowl species must be explicitly labelled if present.
- Blends of landfowl and waterfowl require joint labelling.
- Supply Chain Transparency: Composition information must accompany the filling at each stage of commercial distribution.
Applications
The implementation of kSIST FprEN 18225:2026 supports manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers in the bedding, garment, outdoor gear, and upholstery industries. Adherence ensures:
- Consumer Protection and Transparency: Allows end-users to make informed purchasing decisions based on clear and standardized product labelling.
- Regulatory Compliance: Simplifies compliance for manufacturers distributing within European and international markets, reducing the risk of mislabelling and associated penalties.
- Harmonized Trade: Removes barriers caused by differing national standards, facilitating smoother trade and consistent quality across borders.
- Quality Assurance: Promotes accurate declarations regarding the nature and quantity of both natural (feather and down) and synthetic or other non-plumage materials used as fill.
Manufacturers producing quilts, jackets, cushions, and other filled articles benefit by clearly communicating product contents, regardless of whether the filling is predominantly natural or includes synthetic fibers or foam.
Related Standards
This standard is closely linked to other key documents in the field of feather and down labelling and testing:
- EN 1885: Feather and down - Terms and definitions
- EN 12131: Feather and down - Test methods for quantitative composition (manual method)
- FprEN 18226: Feather and down - Test methods for determining quantitative composition of blends with other materials
- REGULATION (EU) No 1007/2011: Textile fibre names and rules for fibre composition labelling in textile products
Compliance with kSIST FprEN 18225:2026 and these related standards ensures best practices in the accurate labelling of feather, down, and blend-filled articles within the textile and home goods industries.

Introduction
Fillings of feather and down and other suitable materials, natural and synthetic, used as filling materials
have not been covered by national standards dealing with denomination and composition in all CEN
countries.
Where standards exist, they often differ from each other.
This inevitably presents an obstacle to the market or could lead the final consumer to incorrect
interpretations.
To obtain an unambiguous labelling the following items have been considered:
— denominations of the quantity of the components of the plumage and of the fowl species;
— identification of non-plumage components and their quantities;
— information to be stated on labels and in commercial documents;
— assessment of whether test results indicate conformity to the labelling based upon a stipulated
tolerance.
