Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-108: Particular requirements for electrolysers

This part of IEC 60335 deals with the safety of electrolysers that produce low viscosity, ionized liquids intended for use as detergent free wash water in appliances for household and similar purposes and which conform with the standards applicable to such appliances. It applies to electrolysers tested separately, under the most severe conditions that can be expected to occur in normal use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V including direct current (DC) supplied appliances and battery-operated appliances.

Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-108:2026/A11:2026 is a European standard focused on the safety requirements for electrolysers used in household and similar electrical appliances. Administered by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), this amendment (A11) updates standards for electrolysers that produce low viscosity, ionized liquids intended for detergent-free wash water in domestic settings. The standard specifies the rules for electrolysers tested separately under the most challenging operational conditions they may encounter and covers units with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V, including both DC and battery-powered appliances.

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-108:2026/A11:2026 is intended to harmonize appliance safety, reduce risk of injury or malfunction, and ensure compliance with EU and international regulatory frameworks for domestic electrical products.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: The standard details safety measures for household electrolysers, considering all foreseeable hazards in settings involving people and domestic animals.
  • Increased Accessibility: Updates introduce explicit instructions for safe use by children, people with disabilities, and animal proximity, emphasizing supervision and special precautions.
  • Marking and Instructions: Requirements for clear safety instructions, including supervision of children and animals, limitation on cleaning by children, and safe cord placement.
  • Normative References: Integration with related EN and IEC publications for environmental testing, explosive atmospheres, and thermal elements to ensure robust equipment construction.
  • Regulatory Alignment: Supports compliance with EU safety objectives, though certain informative annexes regarding directives on safety and electromagnetic compatibility are not directly applicable.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-108:2026/A11:2026 is specifically relevant for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and certification bodies involved with:

  • Electrical appliances with integrated electrolysers generating ionized, low viscosity liquids
  • Domestic washing machines, dishwashers, and similar appliances seeking detergent-free cleaning solutions
  • Appliances intended for use in homes, laundry areas, care facilities, and environments where safety around children and pets is paramount

Practical benefits include:

  • Assisting organizations in achieving CE marking and demonstrating conformity with the Low Voltage Directive and other relevant EU regulations
  • Helping manufacturers design products that are safe for all household users, including vulnerable populations and animals
  • Providing a clear baseline for risk assessment and supporting quality assurance in product development and testing

Related Standards

Several international and European standards are referenced or linked within SIST EN IEC 60335-2-108:2026/A11:2026, including:

  • EN IEC 60335-1:2023: General safety requirements for household appliances
  • EN IEC 60068-2-52: Environmental testing - Salt mist, cyclic (sodium chloride solution)
  • EN IEC 60079-15: Equipment protection for explosive atmospheres
  • EN 60584-1: Thermocouples - EMF specifications and tolerances
  • ISO 1817:2022: Determination of the effect of liquids on vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber
  • IEC 60335-2-5, IEC 60335-2-7: Additional parts of the 60335 series specifying requirements for other household appliances
  • EN ISO 13732-1: Methods for temperature sensation and burns on the human skin

Summary: SIST EN IEC 60335-2-108:2026/A11:2026 represents an essential reference for safe design, installation, and operation of electrolysers in domestic appliances, aligning with evolving safety and accessibility expectations across Europe. Using this standard helps manufacturers and suppliers maintain compliance and build trust with consumers seeking reliable, safe household technology.
