SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 is the Slovenian version of ETS 300 147 Edition 2 from ETSI. It specifies the SDH multiplexing structure, the hierarchical bit rates, and the mapping schemes used in transmission networks based on Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH). Engineers, network operators, buyers, and test teams use it to align how SDH signals, overhead, and payload mappings are structured for inter-vendor and inter-operator compatibility.
What does SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 specify?
SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 specifies the SDH hierarchy, the basic multiplexing structure, and the mapping schemes for transmission networks based on SDH. It organizes that material in Clauses 1 to 8 and one informative annex.
Clause 1 states the scope, Clauses 2 and 3 bring in references, definitions, and abbreviations, and Clauses 4 to 7 cover the bit rates, multiplexing structure, mapping, overhead bytes, and Section Overhead (SOH). Clause 8 covers conformance testing, and Annex A provides an informative bibliography.
What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003?
SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 relies on ITU-T Recommendations G.707, G.708, and G.709 for the core SDH model, then adds the ETS-specific statements and status markings in Table 1. In practice, the document tells implementers which SDH functions are in scope for compliance and which parts are not relevant to this ETS.
- Clause 4 fixes the hierarchical bit rates according to G.707. That means SDH equipment has to follow the standard rate hierarchy rather than defining its own transport rates.
- Clause 5 defines the basic multiplexing structure shown in Figure 1 as a subset of G.709. This gives designers the signal chain from container through virtual container, tributary unit, administrative unit, and STM-N.
- Clause 6 and Table 1 set the multiplexing method and mapping, and mark each item as Normative (N) or Not Relevant (N/R). In practice, this tells vendors which G.709 functions matter when they are implemented and which are outside the ETS.
- Clause 6 covers Administrative Unit and Tributary Unit multiplexing, pointer processing, maintenance signals, timing recovery, Path Overhead (POH), and the CRC-7 polynomial algorithm. These are the mechanics that keep payloads aligned and traceable across SDH networks.
- Clause 6 also includes tributary mappings into VC-4, VC-3, VC-12, and VC-11, plus mapping of ATM cells. This matters because the standard is not limited to one traffic type and supports different transported signals.
- Clause 7 uses G.708 for the location and description of Section Overhead (SOH) bytes. That is the section-level framing and supervision information that equipment must interpret consistently.
- Clause 8 explains conformance testing at the functional-block level using SDH interface(s). This means compliance is checked by exercising specific network-element functions, not by treating the entire interface as one undivided feature.
- The standard also states that it is not an equipment specification. A function marked Normative must be implemented according to the requirement if that function is present.
What terms does SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 define?
SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 uses the following key abbreviations and terms:
- Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) - a payload type that the standard maps into VC-4, VC-4-Xc, and other virtual containers.
- Administrative Unit Group (AUG) - the grouping used when multiplexing Administrative Units into STM-N.
- Section Overhead (SOH) - the bytes used for section-level control and supervision in SDH.
- Synchronous Transport Module-N (STM-N) - the SDH transport signal at hierarchy level N.
- Path Overhead (POH) - overhead associated with the virtual container path for end-to-end supervision.
- Tributary Unit-n (TU-n) - a lower-order SDH unit used in mapping tributary signals into higher-level containers.
- Virtual Container-n (VC-n) - the payload container that carries mapped traffic within SDH.
- Not Relevant (N/R) - a status used in Table 1 for items that are outside the scope of this ETS.
Who uses SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003?
SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 is used by SDH equipment vendors, network operators, and inter-operator engineering teams. It is also relevant to conformance testers and quality or procurement staff who need to check which SDH mappings, overhead functions, and pointer behaviors a product supports.
What changed in SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 from the previous edition?
SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 is the second edition and it supersedes the first edition of ETS 300 147 from 1992. The scope states that it extends the SDH interface standard to refine overhead byte definitions, add new payload mappings such as ATM cells and DQDB slots, and cover sub-STM-1 radio relay digital sections.
Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003?
SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 uses three ITU-T Recommendations as its normative basis:
- ITU-T G.707 - provides the SDH bit rates used in Clause 4.
- ITU-T G.708 - provides the definitions used in Clause 3 and the SOH byte location and description used in Clause 7.
- ITU-T G.709 - provides the SDH multiplexing structure and mapping framework that Clause 5 and Clause 6 build on.
Annex A lists CCITT G.702, CCITT G.704, and CCITT G.811 as informative background references for hierarchy bit rates, frame structures, and timing requirements.
What does the SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 document contain?
SIST ETS 300 147 E2:2003 contains one figure for the SDH multiplexing structure and one main table that marks G.709 items as Normative or Not Relevant. It also includes pointer processing steps, mapping procedures, a CRC-7 polynomial algorithm, and conformance testing guidance for functional blocks inside a network element. Annex A provides a short bibliography for further technical context.
