SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of ETS 300 413 Edition 1 from ETSI. It defines an information model for multiplex section protection in Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) Network Elements (NE), so implementers know which management objects are used to control protection switching. It is aimed at telecommunications management of SDH equipment that supports the multiplex section protection function.

What does SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 specify?

SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 specifies the NE view of multiplex section protection management for SDH. It identifies the Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) object model needed to manage protection functions across standardized interfaces, and it is limited to information inside the equipment domain visible at the element manager to element interface.

The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, abbreviations, the multiplex-section protection management model, and the object model elements: managed object classes, packages, attributes, actions, notifications, parameters, and name bindings. Annex A is an informative bibliography.

What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 defines the management information needed to control multiplex section protection in SDH NEs. In practice, it tells a vendor or operator what objects, attributes and operations must exist to model protection switching at the NE level.

Management scope and domain

  • The standard applies to SDH NEs that support the multiplex section protection switching function. That matters because the model is only relevant where protection switching is implemented.
  • It covers the equipment domain seen at the element manager to element interface. This means it is about NE-level management data, not higher-level network management processes.
  • It explicitly uses the SDH framework defined in the cited SDH recommendations and the TMN architecture for standardized information exchange. This gives a common management structure for interoperable implementations.

Managed object model

  • Clause 5 lists the managed object classes that can be instantiated, including protection group, protection unit, protected TTP and unprotected CTP objects, plus apsReportRecord. This tells implementers which object types to model in the NE.
  • Clause 6 lists packages such as extraTrafficControlPkg, lastAttemptResultPkg, protectionSwitchExercisePkg, protectionMismatchStatusPkg, priorityPkg and sdhPriorityPkg. These package groupings organize the functions that belong to protection management.
  • Clause 7 lists the key attributes, including protectionGroupType, protectionSwitchMode, revertive, waitToRestoreTime, protectionStatus, protectionMismatchStatus, priority and sdhPriority. In practice, these are the data items an operator reads or sets to describe how protection behaves.

Operations, notifications and bindings

  • Clause 8 defines the actions invokeExercise, invokeProtection and releaseProtection. These are the control operations used to test protection, request a switch or return traffic.
  • Clause 9 defines protectionSwitchReporting as the notification. That gives the NE a standard event for reporting protection switching activity.
  • Clause 10 defines parameters for invokeProtectionError, releaseProtectionError and protectionStatusParameter, which support error handling and status reporting.
  • Clause 11 defines name bindings that attach the protection objects to the SDH NE management tree. This matters because it shows how the model is rooted in the managed element and how protected and unprotected trail objects are related.

What terms does SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 define?

SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 uses a short set of abbreviations to describe the SDH protection model.

  • APS - Automatic Protection Switching, the protection mechanism that moves traffic to a standby path when needed.
  • AUG - Adaptation Unit Group, a grouping used in the name bindings for protected and unprotected trail objects.
  • CTP - Connection Termination Point, the managed endpoint used for connection-level objects.
  • MS - Multiplex Section, the SDH section that is the subject of protection management.
  • NE - Network Element, the equipment domain managed by this information model.
  • Pkg - Package, a grouped set of management capabilities used in the object model.
  • SDH - Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, the transport system on which the protection model is based.
  • TTP - Trail Termination Point, the trail endpoint used in the protection objects.

Who uses SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 is used by SDH equipment vendors, TMN and element management system developers, and network operators managing SDH transport networks. It is also relevant to engineers who design protection switching functions, map them into managed objects, or implement standardized element-manager interfaces.

In practice, these users apply it when defining the NE management model, implementing protection control commands, handling protection switch reports, and checking how protected and unprotected resources are represented in the management system.

Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 relies on several ITU-T and CCITT recommendations that define the SDH environment and management framework.

  • ITU-T G.707, G.708 and G.709 - define SDH bit rates, network node interface and multiplexing structure.
  • ITU-T G.774.1 - provides the NE-view information model for SDH performance monitoring.
  • ITU-T G.774.3 - gives the SDH multiplex-section protection management requirements for the NE view.
  • CCITT G.783 - defines the functional blocks for SDH multiplexing equipment.
  • CCITT G.784 - covers SDH management, including performance monitoring requirements.
  • CCITT M.3010 - sets out the principles for a Telecommunications Management Network.

What does the SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 document contain?

SIST ETS 300 413 E1:2003 contains the structural pieces of an object model rather than a prose procedure. Clauses 5 to 11 list the object classes, packages, attributes, actions, notifications, parameters and name bindings that make up the NE view of multiplex section protection.

For implementation work, these lists are the practical core of the document: they show what the management system must represent, what operations it must accept, what events it may report, and how the protection objects fit into the SDH NE hierarchy. Annex A provides bibliographic references for further background.

1 Scope
This European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) provides an information model, as related to the
multiplex section protection function for the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) as defined in ITU-T
Recommendations G.707 [1], G.708 [2] and G.709 [3].
This ETS identifies the Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) object classes required for the
management of the protection function for SDH Network Elements (NEs). These objects are relevant to
information exchanged across standardised interfaces defined in the CCITT Recommendation M.3010 [8]
TMN architecture.
This ETS applies to SDH NEs which support the multiplex section protection switching function, as
defined in CCITT Recommendation G.783 [6]. Performance monitoring requirements for multiplex section
protection (for the management of SDH equipment with this capability) are provided in CCITT
Recommendation G.784 [7], however, the information model which supports these can be found in ITU-T
Recommendation G.774.1 [4].
This ETS defines:
- an information model, as related to the protection function for the SDH.
This ETS does not define:
- the protocol stack to be used for message communication;
- the network level management processes;
- the application contexts;
- the conformance requirements to be met by an implementation of this inform
