What are the key requirements of EN 1729-2:2023/prA1?

EN 1729-2:2023/prA1 mainly updates how chairs and tables are tested, which reference standards are used, and how specific safety hazards are checked. The practical effect is that a tester or manufacturer must follow the revised order of tests and the revised test setups, not the older wording.

Test sequence and sample use

Clause 4.3 is replaced so that all applicable tests are carried out on the same sample. Dimensional assessment to EN 1729-1 comes first, before the tests in this document.

For chairs, the amendment sets out a defined order for general requirements, additional size-mark requirements, optional stability, overload testing, and the remaining additional requirements. For tables, it sets the order from general requirements to optional stability, strength and durability, and final stability testing. This matters because the same sample and sequence can affect test outcomes and pass/fail decisions.

General safety and accessible openings

Clause 5.1 f is replaced to address holes in accessible tubular or rigid components. Openings in the 8 mm to 18 mm range are only acceptable if penetration is shallow or the opening is capped, and the hazard is checked using CEN/TR 17202:2018, 7.3 and 7.4. In practice, this is a pinch and entrapment check for exposed parts that a buyer or test lab should confirm early in design.

Stability, overturning and durability

Several overturning clauses in 6.2 are updated to use EN 1022:2023 instead of EN 1022:2018, including the checks for forwards, sideways, rearwards and corner stability. Clause 6.2.5 for reclining backrests is also aligned with the updated stability reference. This means stability testing follows the current seating stability method rather than an older version.

Clauses 6.3.4 and 6.3.9 update the force direction shown in Figures 8 and 13 from horizontal to vertical. That affects how the load is applied in the seat-front-edge durability and foot-rail static-load tests.

Table testing reference

Clause 7.2.1 is updated to refer to EN 15372:2023 for non-domestic tables. For users, this ties the table-related testing in EN 1729-2 to a current strength, durability and safety reference.

What terms does EN 1729-2:2023/prA1 use?

• General educational purposes - the ordinary school and early-years use covered by the standard.
• Special purpose workstations - dedicated installations such as laboratories, ranked seating and workshops, which are outside the standard’s application.
• Portable devices - laptop computers or similar portable equipment that the furniture may be used with.
• Backrest - the chair part that supports the user’s back and affects overturning behaviour.
• Reclining backrest - a backrest that changes angle, which triggers extra overturning checks.
• Armrests - side supports that change the sideways overturning test conditions.
• Overload test - the strength check used to assess how the chair or table behaves under high load.
• Corner stability - the stability check for a chair when load is applied in a corner situation.

Who uses EN 1729-2:2023/prA1?

Manufacturers of school furniture use EN 1729-2:2023/prA1 when designing chairs and tables and when preparing type tests. Test laboratories use it to set up stability, durability and safety evaluations.

Quality managers, specifiers and procurement teams use it when checking that products match educational-use requirements. Educational institutions and buyers use it when comparing furniture for kindergartens, childcare settings and early years classrooms.

What changed in EN 1729-2:2023/prA1 from the previous edition?

EN 1729-2:2023/prA1 is a draft amendment that modifies EN 1729-2:2023. The changes stated in the document are:
