Abstract

This document specifies a method for the assessment of the surface resistance to microscratching and relates to rigid surfaces of all finished products, considering the following exceptions:
- Method A is suitable for all types of surface coatings and coverings except for lacquers with pearly or metallic effects.
- Method B is suitable for all types of surface.
- No method applies to finishes on leather and fabrics.
This document is applicable to the test intended to be carried out on a part of finished furniture, but it can be carried out on test panels of the same material, finished in an identical manner to the finished product, and of a size sufficient to meet the requirements of the test.
It is essential that the test be carried out on unused surfaces.

SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 is a SIST-published draft amendment to EN 16611:2023 from CEN. It updates the furniture test method for assessing surface resistance to microscratching. The document is for laboratories, furniture manufacturers, and quality teams that need to carry out or specify this test on rigid finished surfaces or matching test panels.

What does SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 specify?

SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 specifies changes to the existing microscratching test method for furniture surfaces. The underlying method applies to rigid finished surfaces, and the amendment keeps the test focused on practical laboratory use with finished parts or identical test panels.

The scope tied to the base document distinguishes between two methods and a few clear exclusions:

  • Method A is for all types of surface coatings and coverings except lacquers with pearly or metallic effects.
  • Method B is for all types of surface.
  • No method applies to finishes on leather and fabrics.
  • The test may be done on a part of finished furniture or on test panels made from the same material and finished in the same way.
  • The test must be carried out on unused surfaces, which matters because wear history can change the result.

Clause 1Modification to 5.6, Scrub materials
Clause 2Modification to 5.7, Double-sided tape
Clause 3Modification to 5.9, Reference black high gloss HPL
Clause 4Modification to 8.2.1.1, Calibration of ultra fine scrub material
Clause 5Modification to 8.2.2.1, Calibration of very fine scrub material

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026?

SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 changes several preparation and calibration details that affect how the microscratch test is run and repeated. In practice, these changes matter because the test result depends not only on the surface, but also on how the sample is held, what consumables are used, and how the calibration references are selected.

Scrub material use

Clause 1 amends 5.6 so that only the non-printed side of the scrub material is used, and it is used only once. For users, this reduces variation from print effects and repeated use.

Sample securing

Clause 2 amends 5.7 to require 50 mm adhesive tape to prevent the sample from wobbling during the test. That matters because movement during the test can distort the microscratching action.

Reference material for calibration

Clause 3 replaces the title and wording in 5.9. The former “Reference black high gloss HPL” becomes “Black high gloss reference material”, and the description now points to a black high gloss UV-lacquered melamine coating on a manufactured board. This gives laboratories a clearer calibration reference tied to a defined type of material.

Calibration wording

Clauses 4 and 5 update 8.2.1.1 and 8.2.2.1 so that the calibration steps for ultra fine scrub material and very fine scrub material refer to “black high gloss reference material” instead of “reference high gloss HPL”. In practice, this aligns the calibration language with the revised reference material name and description.

What terms does SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 define?

The amendment uses these document-specific terms:

  • Microscratching - the surface damage mechanism the method is intended to assess.
  • Scrub material - the test consumable that contacts the surface during the procedure.
  • Double-sided tape - the securing aid used to keep the sample stable.
  • Black high gloss reference material - the calibration reference named in the amended 5.9 and used in later calibration clauses.
  • Ultra fine scrub material - one of the scrub material grades calibrated in the procedure.
  • Very fine scrub material - the other scrub material grade calibrated in the procedure.
  • HPL - the former reference term used in the base text and replaced in this amendment.

Who uses SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026?

SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 is used by furniture test laboratories, product development teams, and quality managers who need a repeatable way to assess surface resistance to microscratching. It is also relevant to manufacturers, suppliers of surface finishes, and buyers who specify performance checks for rigid finished furniture surfaces. The method is particularly useful when comparing coatings, coverings, and other surface finishes under controlled test conditions.

What changed in SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 from EN 16611:2023?

SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 is a draft amendment to EN 16611:2023. The changes stated in the document are:

  • a new instruction that only the non-printed side of the scrub material is used once
  • a requirement to use 50 mm adhesive tape to stop sample wobble
  • a new title and description for the black high gloss reference material in 5.9
  • wording updates in 8.2.1.1 and 8.2.2.1 so calibration refers to the black high gloss reference material

Which standards are used with SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026?

The amendment works with EN 16611:2023, which is the base furniture microscratching standard being modified. Users need the base standard together with this amendment because the amendment only sets out the changes to selected clauses.

What does the SIST EN 16611:2023/oprA1:2026 document contain?

The document contains a European foreword and five short amendment clauses. Those clauses update scrub materials, tape used to hold the sample, the black high gloss reference material, and two calibration subclauses. It is structured as a modification document, so it points the reader to exact clauses in EN 16611:2023 rather than restating the whole test method.
