IEC 61162-450:2024 specifies interface requirements and methods of test for high speed communication between shipboard navigation and radiocommunication equipment as well as between such systems and other ship systems that need to communicate with navigation and radio-communication equipment. This document is based on the application of an appropriate suite of existing international standards to provide a framework for implementing data transfer between devices on a shipboard Ethernet network.

• This document is limited to protocols for equipment (network nodes) connected to a single
Ethernet network consisting only of OSI level one or two devices and cables (Network
infrastructure).
• This document provides requirements only for equipment interfaces. By specifying
protocols for transmission of IEC 61162-1 sentences, IEC 61162-3 PGN messages and
general binary file data, these requirements will guarantee interoperability between
equipment implementing this document as well as a certain level of safe behaviour of the
equipment itself.
• This document permits equipment using other protocols than those specified in this
document to share a network infrastructure, provided that it is supplied with interfaces
which satisfy the requirements described for ONF.
• This document includes provisions for filtering of the network traffic in order to limit the
amount of traffic to manageable level for each individual equipment.
This document does not contain any system requirements other than the ones that can be
inferred from the sum of individual equipment requirements. An associated standard,
IEC 61162-460, further addresses system requirements.

IEC 61162-1:2010(E) contains the requirements for data communication between maritime electronic instruments, navigation and radiocommunication equipment when interconnected via an appropriate system. Is intended to support one-way serial data transmission from a single talker to one or more listeners. This data is in printable ASCII form and may include information such as position, speed, depth, frequency allocation, etc. Typical messages may be from about 11 to a maximum of 79 characters in length and generally require transmission no more rapidly than one message per second. For applications where a faster transmission rate is necessary, reference should be made to IEC 61162-2. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are listed below:  - certain sentences have been removed as they are not used by other standards prepared by technical committee 80;  - new sentences have been added; corrections have been made to certain sentences (ABK, BBM, DOR, FIR, SSD, TUT, and VTG);  - new fields have been added to certain sentences;  - three additional tests have been added to Annex B.

This International Standard specifies the minimum operational and performance requirements, methods of testing and required test results conforming to performance standards not inferior to those adopted by the IMO in Resolution MSC.192(79). (MSC.192/2) The radar installation, in addition to meeting the general requirements as set out in resolution A.694(17) and the related standard IEC 60945, should comply with the performance standards of MSC.192(79). When a requirement of this standard is different from IEC 60945, the requirement in this standard takes precedence.

This part of IEC 61162 is based upon the NMEA 2000 standard. The NMEA 2000 standard contains the requirements for the minimum implementation of a serial-data communications network to interconnect marine electronic equipment onboard vessels. Equipment designed to this standard will have the ability to share data, including commands and status, with other compatible equipment over a single signalling channel. Data messages are transmitted as a series of data frames, each with robust error check confirmed frame delivery and guaranteed latency times. As the actual data content of a data frame is at best 50 % of the transmitted bits, this standard is primarily intended to support relatively brief data messages, which may be periodic, transmitted as needed, or on-demand by use of query commands. Typical data includes discrete parameters such as position latitude and longitude, GPS status values, steering commands to autopilots, finite parameter lists such as waypoints, and moderately sized blocks of data such as electronic chart database updates. This standard is not necessarily intended to support high-bandwidth applications such as radar, electronic chart or other video data, or other intensive database or file transfer applications. This standard defines all of the pertinent layers of the International Standards Organisation Open Systems Interconnect (ISO/OSI) model, from the application layer to the physical layer, necessary to implement the required IEC 61162-3 network functionality. This standard defines data formats, network protocol, and the minimum physical layer necessary for devices to interface. SOLAS applications shall employ redundant designs (for instance dual networks, redundant network interface circuits) to reduce the impact of single point failures. The electrical definitions in this document are intended to accommodate higher data rates than are specified in IEC 61162-1. Since there is no provision for guaranteed delivery of messages and only limited error-checking capability, it is important this document is used with caution in all safety applications.

The present document defines the functional and operational requirements for navigational radar installations used in
inland waterways as required by CESNI ES-TRIN standard [i.1].
The present document is applicable to radar equipment and its associated primary navigational display intended for the
navigation of vessels on inland waterways with the following characteristics:
• Transmitter Peak Envelope Power up to 10 kW.
• The antenna is rotating and passive.
• Unmodulated single carrier frequency only may be utilized.
The applicable frequencies of operation of this type of radio equipment are given in table 1. These frequencies are
allocated to the radio navigation service, as defined in article 5 of the ITU Radio Regulations [i.4].
