(Main)Coil coated metals - Test methods - Part 12: Resistance to scratching
Coil coated metals - Test methods - Part 12: Resistance to scratching
This document specifies the procedure for determining the resistance of an organic coating on a metallic substrate to penetration by scratching with a needle.
It is possible that with some aluminium alloys and thin gauge steel substrate below 0,4 mm, that rather than scratching, the needle will deform the substrate. Under these conditions, this test method is not applicable.
Soft coatings such as poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and structured coatings will not give a precise result due to the soft nature of the coating and/or the potential for the needle to snag.
The method is not applicable to conductive coatings.
Bandbeschichtete Metalle - Prüfverfahren - Teil 12: Widerstand gegen Ritzen

- 01-Sep-2024
Overview
SIST EN 13523-12:2024 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the test method for determining the resistance to scratching of organic coatings applied on metallic substrates, particularly coil coated metals. This test method assesses the coating's ability to withstand penetration caused by scratching with a needle under a defined load. The standard is essential for quality control and performance evaluation of organic coatings, mainly in the coil coating industry.
This updated 2024 edition supersedes EN 13523-12:2017, including improvements such as guidance on scratching direction and detailed procedures for manufacturing and re-tipping scratch test needles. It is mandatory for use as a national standard in CEN member countries.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Suitable for organic coatings on metallic substrates.
- Not applicable for aluminium alloys and thin gauge steel below 0.4 mm thickness due to substrate deformation instead of scratching.
- Unsuitable for soft coatings like poly vinyl chloride (PVC), structured coatings, or conductive coatings due to imprecision or test limitations.
Test Principle
The test involves dragging a test panel beneath a needle with a spherical tip, applying a specified load to detect penetration by electrical contact with the metallic substrate.Apparatus and Materials
- Scratch apparatus compliant with EN ISO 1518-1, which includes a sliding table, needle holder, and electrical meter for penetration detection.
- Needles with tips made of hardened steel or tungsten carbide; tungsten carbide recommended for longer service life. Procedures for needle manufacture and re-tipping are detailed in the annex.
Test Procedure
- Panels are conditioned to ambient or specified temperature and humidity.
- The scratching direction relative to the rolling direction is defined and controlled.
- Multiple tests are run at increasing loads until penetration occurs, with results expressed as pass/fail or load values.
- Smooth, consistent scratching movement is crucial for valid results.
Reporting Requirements
Test reports must include product details, testing conditions (temperature, scratching direction), results, deviations, observations, and test date, ensuring traceability and reproducibility.
Applications
SIST EN 13523-12:2024 is primarily applied in industries involving coil coated metals, including:
- Architectural and automotive industries where durable organic coatings on metal panels are critical.
- Manufacturing quality control for verifying coating protection against scratching during handling, forming, and end-use.
- Material development and R&D to assess new coating formulations for scratch resistance.
- Compliance and certification processes as part of broader coil coating standards.
This standard supports enhanced product reliability by providing a reliable method to assess the mechanical robustness of organic coatings against mechanical damage such as scratching.
Related Standards
SIST EN 13523-12:2024 is part of the comprehensive EN 13523 series on coil coated metals test methods, including but not limited to:
- EN 13523-0:2021 – General introduction to coil coated metal test methods.
- EN 13523-1 to EN 13523-29 – Covering other properties such as film thickness, gloss, adhesion, impact resistance, UV resistance, solvent resistance, abrasion resistance, and environmental exposure testing.
Additional relevant standards:
- EN ISO 1518-1 – Paints and varnishes - Determination of scratch resistance by constant-loading method, which aligns closely with the testing apparatus requirements.
- EN 1396 – Specifications for coil coated aluminium and aluminium alloys.
- EN 10169 – Technical delivery conditions for continuously organic coated steel flat products.
For precise conditioning environments, EN 23270 defines the temperature and humidity conditions for testing paints and coatings.
By implementing SIST EN 13523-12:2024, stakeholders can ensure standardised evaluation of scratch resistance critical for durability and aesthetic quality of coil coated metals, enhancing product performance and customer confidence.
