Overview
EN 13523-9:2022 (CEN) specifies a standardized procedure to determine the resistance to water immersion of organic coatings on metallic substrates. The method applies to a wide range of coil coated finishes, including metallic, embossed, textured, pearlescent and printed coatings. Results provide an indication of water resistance and are used for coating validation, quality control and comparative assessment of coil coated metals.
Key aspects included: test panel preparation, scribing, immersion conditions, assessment of blistering and corrosion creep, and reporting requirements.
Key Topics
- Test principle: Immersion of a scribed test panel in deionised water at (40 ± 1) °C for a specified duration, followed by evaluation of blistering and corrosion at scribes and unprotected edges.
- Test panels and orientation: Panels are nominally 150 mm × 100 mm (150 mm in the rolling direction). Panels are supported at a nominal angle of 15° to 20° to the vertical and immersed to approximately three-quarters of their length.
- Scribing: Two diagonal scribes crossing at the panel centre are made using the specified cutting tool to expose at least 0.2 mm of substrate (EN ISO 17872). For zinc-coated substrates, the scribe should reach the zinc layer but not the steel beneath.
- Water quality and tank conditions: Deionised water (EN ISO 3696 Grade 3) with conductivity ≤ 5 µS/cm at 25 °C is used. The tank is maintained at (40 ± 1) °C; circulating/stirring is permitted but vigorous aeration is not.
- Assessment criteria: Blistering is assessed per EN ISO 4628-2. Corrosion creep (delamination) at scribes and edges is measured and reported as an average distance in mm according to EN ISO 4628-8.
- Timing and reporting: Panels are wiped and assessed within 1 hour of removal; where higher accuracy is required, ambient conditions should follow EN 23270 (23 ±2 °C, 50 ±5% RH). The test report must include identification, test duration, edge protection status, removal method for loose coating, and measured results.
Applications
- Quality control: Routine production checks to verify water resistance of coil coated products.
- Specification and acceptance testing: Supplier and purchaser verification of coating durability under immersion conditions.
- R&D and formulation screening: Comparative evaluation of organic coating systems for resistance to water-induced blistering and corrosion.
