SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 is the Slovenian adoption of the ISO standard for neck laceration protectors used in ice hockey. It specifies performance requirements and test methods for protectors worn by ice hockey players, including goalkeepers, and referees. The document is aimed at manufacturers, test laboratories, and buyers who need to verify that the protector covers the intended area and resists cutting from skate blades.

What does SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 specify?

SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 specifies how neck laceration protectors for ice hockey are classified, tested, marked, and supplied with user information. It applies to protectors worn by players and referees, and it excludes protection against impacts from pucks, sticks, or other objects.

The document is organized into these main parts:

  • Clause 1 Scope
  • Clause 2 Normative references
  • Clause 3 Terms and definitions
  • Clause 4 Requirements
  • Clause 5 Test methods
  • Clause 6 Test report
  • Clause 7 Markings
  • Clause 8 Information for users
  • Annex ZA on the relationship with EU PPE legislation
AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ZARelationship between this European Standard and Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027?

SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 focuses on fit, coverage, innocuousness, recovery after deformation, and cut resistance. In practice, a protector has to stay in place, protect the intended neck area, and remain safe to wear during normal ice hockey use.

Types and coverage

Clause 4.1 defines two types: Type E1, which includes a bib covering the protected area, and Type E2, which covers the protected area without that bib arrangement. For a buyer or specifier, this is the first decision point because the two types do not offer the same coverage pattern.

Clause 4.5 requires the protector to cover the protected area defined for the relevant neck form and size. Figure 1 and Figure 2, together with Table 2, show the required coverage and size relationships.

Safety and ergonomics

Clause 4.2 refers to ISO 10256-1:2024 for ergonomics, and Clause 4.3 refers to its innocuousness requirements. The protector must not harm the wearer or other players during normal use, must have no removable parts in the protected area, and any size adjustment must work across the full size range. That matters because the product is expected to be worn in contact with the body and other players.

Stability and cut resistance

Clause 4.6 requires the protector to recover after being pressed down so that the cut-resistant material still covers the protected area. Clause 4.7 requires the normalized cutting stroke length for all cuts to be greater than 20 mm when tested as specified. This is the core safety performance check: the protector must keep its protective position and resist blade cutting.

Test preparation and conditions

Clause 5.1.2 requires testing of new, complete protectors in each size and model. Samples 2 and 3 are washed three times before testing, then dried and conditioned as specified. That means the document checks performance after laundering, not only when new.

Marking and user information

Clause 7 requires the designation “neck laceration protector for ice hockey players” and the size or size range expressed as minimum and maximum neck circumference. Clause 8 requires warnings about the limited protection provided, the need for correct fit and maintenance, and the fact that Type E2 provides only partial neck protection, with Type E1 recommended to minimize injury risk.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 define?

SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 defines several terms that help interpret the test setup and product design.

  • neck form - a solid or hollow shaped object used to support a neck laceration protector during evaluation.
  • bib - the part of the protector that lies over the anterior thoracic region.
  • median plane - the vertical plane through the center of the neck form from front to back.
  • model - a category of protector with the same essential characteristics, available in multiple sizes.
  • neck laceration protector - a cut-resistant device worn to reduce the risk of laceration injury from skate blades in the protected area.
  • neck part - the part of the protector that surrounds the cylindrical portion of the neck form.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027?

SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 is used by manufacturers of ice hockey protective equipment, test laboratories, conformity assessment bodies, buyers, and quality managers. It is also relevant to teams and organizations that specify equipment for ice hockey players, including goalkeepers, and referees.

In practice, these users apply the standard to choose a design type, verify coverage on size-specific neck forms, run laundering and conditioning steps before testing, and prepare the required markings and user warnings.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 is the second edition and cancels and replaces ISO 10256-5:2017. The stated changes are:

  • clarified definitions in Clause 3.2
  • added Clause 4.1 to describe the two types of neck laceration protectors
  • modified Clause 4.3.2
  • added a new stability and recovery requirement and test procedure in Clause 4.6
  • clarified cut resistance in Clause 4.7
  • clarified sample preparation in Clause 5.1.2.3
  • clarified stability and recovery testing in Clause 5.5
  • clarified cut resistance verification in Clause 5.6
  • revised Table 2 to reduce the number of neck forms required
  • added a small neck form for smaller protector sizes

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027?

SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 uses these normative references:

  • ISO 6330:2021 - gives the domestic washing and drying procedures used for laundering test samples.
  • ISO 13997:2023 - provides the cut resistance test method that is adapted for this document.
  • ISO 10256-1:2024 - supplies the general requirements, test conditions, tolerances, marking rules, and user information that this part builds on.

What does the SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 document contain?

SIST EN ISO 10256-5:2027 contains the full test and specification framework for neck laceration protectors. It includes two protector types, neck form dimensions, protected-area figures, a sample table, and modified test procedures for coverage, stability, and cut resistance.

The document also contains a test report requirement, marking rules, and user warnings. Annex ZA links the standard to the essential requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 for personal protective equipment, which is relevant when the standard is used for conformity assessment in the European context.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

Introduction
Ice hockey is a high speed, collision sport in which there is a risk of injury.
By playing this sport, participants accept the risk of serious injury, paralysis and/or death.
The intention of neck protection used in ice hockey is to reduce the frequency and severity of lacerations to
the neck. The protective function is such that the penetration of a skate blade is counteracted.
