Overview

EN 13484:2012 - Helmets for users of luges (CEN) is a European Standard that specifies minimum performance requirements and test methods for luge helmets used in competition in ice channels. The standard defines construction, protective performance, retention system behaviour, field of vision, marking and manufacturer information, and required laboratory tests to demonstrate compliance.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & intent: Applies to helmets for competitive luge use in ice channels; aims to reduce skull and head injury risk while balancing wearer comfort and usability.
  • Construction & materials:
    • Materials in contact with the skin must resist degradation from sweat/cosmetics and must not cause skin disorders.
    • Helmet design must avoid user injury from parts such as visors, rivets and edges and support use with spectacles and hearing.
  • Field of vision:
    • Required unobstructed visual field: horizontal 105°, upwards 25°, downwards 45° (tested per EN 13484 test procedures).
  • Extent of coverage:
    • Defined coverage area relative to standardized headforms (see standard figures and tables for exact dimensions by headform size).
  • Shock absorbing capacity:
    • Peak acceleration limit for any impact: ≤ 250 g (measured with specified headforms and impact apparatus).
  • Resistance to penetration:
    • A penetration punch test where the point must not touch the headform after impact.
  • Retention system properties:
    • Chin straps: minimum 15 mm width, must not include a chin cup; fastening devices must adjust and maintain strap tension.
    • Dynamic extension limits: max 35 mm; residual extension max 25 mm (includes fastening slippage).
    • Release mechanisms must remain operable after testing; colour guidance given (opening mechanisms recommended red/orange; avoid green).
  • Durability, marking and information:
    • Requirements for conditioning (room, low temperature, artificial ageing), marking and manufacturer-supplied information required for safe use and traceability.
  • Testing & test methods:
    • Includes visual inspection, headforms (EN 960), sampling, conditioning, impact zones, apparatus and detailed test procedures. Normative references include EN 960 and ISO 6487.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Helmet manufacturers and designers - to design, validate and certify luge helmets against recognized European performance criteria.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform standardized impact, penetration and retention tests.
  • Sport governing bodies and competition organizers - to specify compliant protective equipment for athletes in ice-channel luge events.
  • Purchasers, safety officers and regulators - to assess conformity, procurement and enforcement of protective equipment standards.
  • Product compliance and quality teams - for labeling, user information and conformity documentation (EN 13484:2012 supports essential requirements of EU PPE directives as noted in the standard).

Related standards (normative references)

  • EN 960 - Headforms for use in helmet testing (referenced by EN 13484).
  • ISO 6487 - Measurement techniques in impact tests (instrumentation).
