Overview
SIST EN ISO 17236:2025 - Leather - Physical and mechanical tests - Determination of extension set (ISO 17236:2025), published by CEN, establishes a standardized method for determining the extension set of leather. This standard is primarily intended for upholstery leather but is applicable to all flexible leathers. The test evaluates the permanent elongation (extension set) that remains in leather after it has been subjected to repeated extension under controlled conditions. This information is essential for assessing the durability and performance of leather used in various applications.
Key Topics
- Extension Set Testing: The document outlines a method to measure the extension set, which is the permanent stretch that leather undergoes after being repeatedly loaded.
- Applicability: While the procedure focuses on upholstery leather, the standard method can be applied to any type of flexible leather.
- Specimen Preparation: Detailed guidance is provided for the selection, preparation, and conditioning of leather specimens, referencing related standards for testing consistency.
- Apparatus and Equipment: The procedure specifies the use of tensile testing machines, thickness gauges, press knives, and rulers suitable for the precise measurement of leather’s physical properties.
- Test Procedure: The leather sample is repeatedly elongated under set conditions, and measurements are taken before and after to calculate the extension set as a percentage of the original length.
- Reporting: The standard prescribes the details to be included in the test report for traceability, repeatability, and cross-comparison.
- Alignment with Other Standards: SIST EN ISO 17236:2025 ensures compatibility and alignment with related standards, such as ISO 2418 and ISO 2419, for specimen preparation and conditioning.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 17236:2025 is highly relevant across the leather industry, particularly for:
- Upholstery Manufacturers: Ensuring consistent quality and long-term durability of leather used in furniture and automotive seating.
- Footwear and Garment Producers: Assessing and comparing the physical properties of leather for products where flexibility and resistance to permanent stretch are crucial.
- Quality Control Laboratories: Providing a reproducible method for quality assurance and product benchmarking.
- Leather Suppliers and Buyers: Enabling a transparent comparison of material properties to meet contractual and regulatory requirements.
- Product Development and R&D: Supporting innovation within the leather industry through standardized testing and material performance assessment.
- Regulatory Compliance: Contributing to compliance with European and international market regulations for leather goods.
The standard gives both manufacturers and clients the assurance that leather products meet key physical performance parameters, directly impacting customer satisfaction and product lifespan.
Related Standards
For comprehensive leather testing and assessment, the following standards are closely related and referenced within SIST EN ISO 17236:2025:
- ISO 2418: Specifies the position and preparation of specimens for chemical, physical, and mechanical leather tests.
- ISO 2419: Covers the conditioning of specimens and test pieces prior to physical and mechanical leather tests.
- ISO 2589: Outlines the method for determining the thickness of leather.
- ISO 7500-1:2018: Details the calibration and verification of force-measuring systems in testing machines.
These standards, used in conjunction with SIST EN ISO 17236:2025, facilitate a reliable, standardized approach to physical and mechanical testing of leather, supporting global trade and technological development in the leather sector. Adherence to these methods ensures consistent results, fosters industry best practices, and supports continuous improvement in product quality.
