Electric motor-operated electric tools - Dust measurement procedure - Part 2-3: Particular requirements for concrete grinders and disk-type sanders

1.1   General
This European Standard specifies general requirements for the dust measurement of electric motor-operated tools supplied from mains or from batteries. This standard applies to those tools with and without dust extraction unit where dust such as mineral dust containing silica or wood dust is expected.
1.2   Types of dust
Dust is a disperse distribution of solid substances in gases, particularly air, resulting from mechanical processes. According to EN 481, two size categories are to be differentiated: the inhalable dust and the respirable dust fraction. Inhalable dust refers to the entire inhalable fraction of the dust through mouth and/or nose. Respirable dust relates to the fraction of the inhalable dust that can reach the pulmonary alveoli due to its small particle size.
This part of EN 50632 applies to concrete grinders and disc-type sanders.

Overview

EN 50632-2-3:2016 (CLC) is the CENELEC European standard that defines the dust measurement procedure for electric motor‑operated concrete grinders and disc‑type sanders. It is Part 2‑3 of the EN 50632 series and is to be used in conjunction with EN 50632‑1:2015 (general requirements). The standard specifies test setups, operating conditions and reporting requirements for measuring inhalable and respirable dust (including mineral dust containing silica and wood dust) produced by mains- or battery‑supplied tools, with or without dust extraction units.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and dust definitions: Distinguishes between inhalable and respirable dust fractions per EN 481; applies to concrete grinders and disc‑type sanders.
  • Test procedures and set‑ups: Specifies test rigs (A‑support, 15° inclination), sample placement and orientations for repeatable measurements.
  • Material and sample requirements:
    • Concrete grinders: concrete slabs (400×400 to 600×600 mm) compliant with EN 1339 and stored dry for ≥3 weeks.
    • Disc sanders (mineral): gypsum blocks per EN 12859 (dense, ≥1 250 kg/m3).
    • Disc sanders (wood): beech panels and oak parquet with defined humidity limits.
  • Operating conditions:
    • Concrete grinders: feed force adjusted to achieve 70–90% of rated input; minimum 1 200 g material collected in dust unit.
    • Disc‑type sanders (gypsum): minimum collected material 1 500 g (≤150 mm) or 2 000 g (>150 mm); sanding paper P80; maximum speed.
    • Wood sanding: feed forces specified by tool mass (30 N ±5 N for <1.5 kg; 50 N ±5 N for ≥1.5 kg); parquet sanding speed 20–25 m/min.
  • Instrumentation and reporting:
    • Instrumentation clause from Part 1 applies.
    • Results must report material type/manufacturer/composition/hardness and, for tests in Tables 101/102, the mean respirable dust concentration.

Practical applications and users

Who uses EN 50632-2-3:2016:

  • Tool manufacturers validating dust emissions and designing or verifying dust extraction systems.
  • Independent test laboratories performing standardized dust emission measurements.
  • Occupational hygienists and safety officers assessing silica and wood dust exposure risks.
  • Certification bodies and procurement teams requiring objective dust‑emission data for compliance and labeling.
  • Product designers optimizing abrasives and accessories to reduce airborne dust.

Benefits:

  • Enables consistent, repeatable measurement of respirable and inhalable dust from grinders and sanders.
  • Supports risk assessment, regulatory compliance and product improvement to reduce silica exposure.
