Explosion prevention and protection in underground mines - Protective systems - Part 2: Passive water trough barriers
This standard specifies requirements for explosion barriers in mines which are used as protection devices to prevent flame transmission in mine galleries due to the presence of mine gas/air, coal dust/air, or hybrid mixtures. This standard specifies test methods to verify operation requirements and to determine safe limits of use. It covers both active and passive systems. The standard also covers design guidance for use of explosion barriers in mines, installation requirements and maintenance requirements.
Explosionsschutz in untertägigen Bergwerken - Schutzsysteme - Teil 2: Passive Wassertrogsperren

Overview
prEN 14591-2 (2004) - part of the CEN prEN 14591 series - specifies requirements for explosion prevention and protection in underground mines with a focus on passive water trough barriers. The standard defines the role of water trough barriers as protective devices to prevent flame transmission in mine galleries arising from mine gas/air, coal dust/air, or hybrid mixtures. It sets out test methods to verify operational performance and to determine safe limits of use, and it provides design guidance, installation requirements, and maintenance guidance for these barriers.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Use of passive water trough barriers to interrupt flame propagation in underground mine galleries.
- Barrier performance requirements: Criteria that water trough systems must meet to be considered effective for flame arrest and mitigation.
- Test methods: Procedures to verify operation requirements and to determine safe operating limits and expected behavior under explosive conditions.
- Design guidance: Principles for sizing, siting, and integrating water trough barriers into mine galleries and ventilation routes.
- Installation requirements: Practical requirements for mounting, sealing, and interfacing barriers with mine infrastructure.
- Maintenance and inspection: Recommended routines and checks to ensure barrier integrity and reliability over time.
- Integration with other systems: How passive water trough barriers fit into overall mine protective systems and emergency response planning.
Applications
- Protecting mine galleries and passageways from flame transmission after an ignition of methane, coal dust, or mixed atmospheres.
- Installed at strategic locations in underground ventilation networks, entries, crosscuts, and working faces to limit explosion propagation.
- Used by mining operations as part of layered safety systems alongside detection, ventilation control, and active suppression measures.
- Applied during mine design, retrofit, or safety upgrade projects to meet regulatory or corporate safety requirements.
Who Uses This Standard
- Mine safety engineers and designers specifying explosion protection systems.
- Mining operators and maintenance teams responsible for installation and upkeep.
- Safety auditors and inspectors assessing compliance and operational readiness.
- Manufacturers and suppliers of passive explosion barriers and water trough systems.
- Regulators and consultants developing mine safety plans and emergency procedures.
Related Standards
- Other parts of the prEN 14591 series addressing protective systems for mines.
- National and international mine safety regulations and standards from CEN, ISO, and relevant mining authorities.
