Overview
EN IEC 63522-44:2025 - published by CLC/CENELEC and identical to IEC 63522-44:2025 - specifies a standardized salt‑mist (salt spray) test method for electrical relays. The standard is used to assess the ability of relays (electromechanical, reed, solid‑state, time relays and combinations) to withstand corrosive atmospheres encountered during transportation, storage and operational use. The test procedure refers to IEC 60068‑2‑11 (Test Ka) and IEC 60068‑2‑52 (Test Kb) and is intended to evaluate protective coatings, contact integrity and overall relay durability in salt‑laden environments.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose
- Assess suitability of relays for use/storage in salt‑laden atmospheres and evaluate protective coatings.
- Referenced salt‑mist tests
- Test Ka (IEC 60068‑2‑11) - continuous salt mist; preferred method. Test conditions are to be specified by the manufacturer.
- Test Kb (IEC 60068‑2‑52) - cyclic salt mist (sodium chloride solution); alternative method.
- Preconditioning
- Optional dry heat: 55 °C ± 2 K for 48 h.
- Optional damp heat: 25 °C ± 5 K, 91–95% RH for 48 h.
- Test procedure structure
- Preconditions → Exposure (Ka or Kb) → Recovery.
- Manufacturer must specify certain test conditions (e.g., solution concentration, duration, cycle parameters).
- Evaluation and acceptance
- External visual inspection, internal visual inspection, final functional checks and measurements (e.g., contact resistance, dielectric strength) as defined in companion parts.
- Detailed test report requirements for reproducibility and traceability.
Practical applications and users
EN IEC 63522-44:2025 is directly applicable for:
- Relay manufacturers validating product robustness against marine/coastal, industrial and roadside environments.
- Environmental test laboratories performing salt‑spray/corrosion qualification.
- OEMs and system integrators specifying relay components for power, rail, marine, telecommunications and outdoor control equipment.
- Procurement, QA and compliance teams requiring standardized environmental test evidence for supplier qualification and product acceptance.
- Certification bodies and test houses using consistent methods to compare protective coatings and contact reliability.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
