SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 is a SIST standard in the IEC 63522 series for electrical relays. It specifies a standard impulse voltage test method for checking whether relay insulation can withstand specified transient overvoltages during transportation, storage and operational use. Engineers, test laboratories, quality managers and buyers can use it to understand how the test is set up, what conditions apply, and what has to be recorded.

What does SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 specifies one test method for devices under test (DUTs): the impulse voltage test. The document is organized into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Test procedure, Evaluation, and informative Annex A with an example test circuit.

The scope links the test to expected conditions in transport, storage and operation. In practice, that means the standard is about verifying insulation performance under a defined transient stress, not about general relay performance.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AExample of a test circuit for impulse voltage test, with example test points and impulse waveform parameters

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026?

Test conditions and test setup

SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 requires the test to be run under the ambient conditions given in IEC 63522-0, Table 2, after conditioning for 1 h to 2 h at those conditions. This matters because the relay has to be tested in a controlled state that other laboratories can reproduce.

The impulse voltage is selected from IEC 60664-1, Table F.6, and the waveform follows IEC 61180:2016, 7.1, or the relevant product standard. Altitude correction from IEC 60664-1 also applies, so the test level remains meaningful when the test site is above sea level.

Application of the impulse test

SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 states that the impulse generator output impedance shall not be higher than 500 Ω. Annex A gives an example circuit, which helps a lab build a generator that produces the required impulse shape.

The test points are the terminals and housing specified in clause 4.3 b). The test is carried out with at least three impulses of each polarity unless the detail specification says otherwise, and the interval between impulses shall be at least 1 s. In practice, this tells the tester how many pulses to apply and how to connect the relay.

Preconditioning and conditions to be specified

SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 allows preconditioning when the relevant product standard requires it for a relay in new condition. Clause 4.3 lists the items that must be specified when they differ from the default method, including the number of impulse tests, the terminals or housing used, the impulse waveform, the output impedance, the peak voltage Vpeak, preconditioning details, leakage current, and the required final measurements. This is the part that a product standard or test plan uses to tailor the method to a specific relay.

Evaluation and reporting

SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 accepts the test only if leakage current stays within the specified limit and there is no breakdown or flashover. If applicable, the relay must also pass the functional tests in IEC 63522-7 and the dielectric strength test in IEC 63522-4.

Clause 5.2 requires a test report that contains enough information to reproduce the test. That includes the relay identification, altitude if above 2 000 m, preconditioning details, Vpeak, t1 and t2, test points, pulse count, pulse interval, waveform, generator impedance, final measurements and leakage current.

What terms does SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 define?

SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 uses the terms and definitions from IEC 63522-0. The test method also relies on a few practical terms:

  • DUT - device under test, meaning the relay being evaluated.
  • Impulse voltage - a transient overvoltage applied to stress the insulation.
  • Preconditioning - any prior conditioning required before the test starts.
  • Leakage current - current through the insulation during the test, limited by the detail specification.
  • Breakdown - an insulation failure that is not allowed.
  • Flashover - a surface discharge across insulation that is not allowed.
  • Functional tests - post-test checks carried out in accordance with IEC 63522-7.

Who uses SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026?

SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 is used by relay manufacturers, test laboratories, and quality or reliability teams that need a defined impulse voltage test for electrical relays. It is also useful for specification writers, buyers and auditors who need a clear test method for insulation verification and reporting.

Which standards are used with SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026?

  • IEC 63522-0 - gives the general guidance, terms and ambient conditions used by this part.
  • IEC 60664-1:2020 and IEC 60664-1:2020/AMD1:2025 - provide the impulse voltage selection table and the altitude correction rules.
  • IEC 61180:2016 - provides the high-voltage test technique and waveform requirements used for the impulse.
  • IEC 63522-4 - provides the dielectric strength test used in final checking, if applicable.
  • IEC 63522-7 - provides the functional tests used in final checking, if applicable.
  • IEC 60060-1:2025 - is cited in Annex A for impulse time-parameter terminology and the figure source.
  • IEC 61810-1, IEC 61810-10:2019, IEC 62246-1:2015, IEC 62246-1-1:2018 - are listed in the bibliography as related relay documents.

What does the SIST EN IEC 63522-46:2026 document contain?

Clause 4 gives the test purpose, preconditioning, test conditions and the required application of the impulse voltage. Clause 5 sets out the acceptance criteria and the reporting requirements. Annex A provides an example of a test circuit, a simplified combination wave generator diagram, typical impulse time parameters, and example test points for electrical relays.

Table A.1 shows example test points for relay terminals and housing connections. Figure A.1 shows the simplified circuit diagram of the combination wave generator, and Figure A.2 explains the impulse voltage time parameters.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
