(Amendment)Furniture - Safety, strength and durability - Requirements for domestic tables
- Abstract
This document specifies the minimum requirements for the safety, strength and durability of all types of domestic tables intended for use by adults, including those with glass in their construction. It also contains additional test methods in Annex A and Annex B.
It does not apply to office tables and office desks, tables for non-domestic use, tables for educational institutions or outdoor tables for which European Standards exist.
It does not apply to trestle tables.
With the exception of stability tests, this document does not provide assessment of the suitability of any storage features included in domestic tables.
It does not include requirements for electrical safety.
It does not include requirements for the resistance to ageing and degradation.
Annex A (normative) contains test methods for finger entrapment.
Annex B (informative) contains a table top deflection test.
Annex C (informative) contains a rationale.

SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 is the Slovenian version of the CEN draft amendment prA1 to EN 12521:2023, published by SIST. It updates the safety, strength and durability requirements for domestic tables intended for use by adults, including tables with glass in their construction. For manufacturers, test labs and buyers, it shows how the table standard is being revised for finger-entrapment and shear/compression hazards.
What does SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 specify?
SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 specifies minimum safety, strength and durability requirements for domestic tables. It is aimed at tables for home use, and it includes additional test methods in Annex A and Annex B.
The scope excludes several other table categories, so the document is not the right choice for office tables and desks, tables for non-domestic use, tables for educational institutions, outdoor tables covered by other European Standards, or trestle tables. It also does not set requirements for electrical safety or for resistance to ageing and degradation.
The document is organised as an amendment to EN 12521:2023. The text updates Clause 3, Clauses 5.2 and 5.3, Clause 7, Annex A and Annex C.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Normative test methods for finger entrapment |
| Annex B | Informative table top deflection test |
| Annex C | Informative rationale |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026?
SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 mainly changes how certain hazards are named, checked and reported. In practice, these changes affect how a table is tested and how the results are documented.
Hazard definitions in Clause 3
Clause 3 adds definitions for shear point and compression point. That matters because the later requirements now refer to these hazards more precisely, which helps testers and manufacturers apply the same interpretation.
Holes and accessible parts in 5.2
Clause 5.2 updates the wording for holes in tubular or rigid components by linking the requirement to accessible parts. In practice, this keeps the focus on areas a user can reach.
Shear and compression hazards in 5.3
Clauses 5.3.2 and 5.3.3 are revised for shear and compression points when setting up, folding, and using powered mechanisms. The amendment also removes one closing test-based statement in the powered-mechanism subclause, so the hazard assessment follows the updated wording instead of the deleted sentence.
Use conditions in 5.3.4
Clause 5.3.4 replaces the description of representative normal use with two specific checks:
- a vertical static load on the main surface using part of the force from Test 2 in Table 2, applied close to the edge limit given in the text
- a horizontal durability test using the force and application point from the test method, with or without the specified mass
That means the hazard is assessed under conditions closer to how a table is expected to be used, rather than under one generic loading condition.
Test reporting in Clause 7
Clause 7 adds a report item for the forces applied, when the test method specifies them. This matters because test reports must now record enough information to show exactly how the table was checked.
Annex A finger-entrapment testing
Annex A updates the test probe description, the test method wording and the process flow. It also states that if the 7 mm probe does not enter, or enters less than 10 mm, no hazard is present, which gives a clear pass criterion for this check.
What terms does SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 define?
- Shear point - a location where two moving parts pass each other and can cut an object in their path.
- Compression point - a location where two moving surfaces reduce the gap or volume between them.
- Accessible parts - the parts that are reached by the user and therefore matter in the hole requirement in Clause 5.2.
- Finger entrapment - a hazard checked in Annex A with the 7 mm probe.
- Test probe - the hard, smooth, 7 mm hemispherical probe used in Annex A to check access.
- Domestic tables - tables intended for use by adults in a home setting.
Who uses SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026?
SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 is used by furniture manufacturers, product designers, test laboratories, quality managers and conformity assessment teams. It is also useful for buyers and specifiers who need to choose tables that will be checked against a recognised domestic-table safety standard.
The amendment is especially relevant for teams working on folding tables, powered mechanisms, glass tables and designs that could create finger-entrapment, shear or compression hazards.
What changed in SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 is a draft amendment to EN 12521:2023. The changes stated in the document are:
- new definitions for shear point and compression point in Clause 3
- wording changes in 5.2 for holes in tubular or rigid components
- wording changes in 5.3.2, 5.3.3 and 5.3.4 for shear and compression hazards
- an added test-report item in Clause 7 for applied forces
- updates to Annex A, including the probe description, test method wording, figure references and process flow
- deletion of Annex A.2
- a reworked rationale in Annex C, including the trestle-table explanation and the reason for using 60% of the static test force in one check
Which standards are used with SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026?
EN 12521:2023 is the base European Standard that this amendment modifies. SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 is meant to be read with that document, because it changes its definitions, test methods, test report content and annexes.
What does the SIST EN 12521:2024/kFprA1:2026 document contain?
The document contains a European foreword and a set of numbered modifications to the base standard. It revises Clause 3, several subclauses in Clause 5, Clause 7, Annex A and Annex C.
Annex A contains the finger-entrapment test method, including the probe, the process flow and the test sequence used to decide whether a hazard is present. Annex B contains the table top deflection test, which is informative. Annex C gives rationale for selected choices, including the exclusion of trestle tables and the reduced static force used in one assessment.
