Overview

SIST ETS 300 392-10-7 E1:2003 is a European standard detailing the requirements for the Short Number Addressing (SNA) supplementary service within Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) systems. Issued by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard forms part of the broader series addressing TETRA Voice plus Data (V+D) services. The SNA service enhances TETRA's usability by allowing users to employ abbreviated (short) numbers instead of full subscriber identities, streamlining operations in digital trunked radio systems, particularly for networks with many users or frequently dialed addresses.

The standard defines user-oriented service descriptions and outlines key procedures and potential interactions with other TETRA supplementary services. It is aimed at ensuring consistent implementation across European TETRA networks and supporting interoperability between service providers.

Key Topics

  • Short Number Addressing (SNA): Provides a mechanism for TETRA users to communicate using pre-defined short numbers linked to full individual or group identities.
  • Service Definition: Distinguishes between use of short numbers (SNA-1) for address abbreviation and invocation or suppression of other supplementary services (SNA-2) when using short numbers.
  • User and Provider Roles: Details roles of authorized users and service providers in defining, registering, and managing short numbers and associated service profiles.
  • Procedures and Operations: Describes processes for activation/deactivation, definition, registration, interrogation, and invocation of short number addressing functionality.
  • Interaction with Other Services: Assesses how SNA operates alongside other supplementary services, confirming there are generally no conflicts or dependencies.
  • Interoperability: Notes how short number addressing can be provided across inter-system interfaces upon operator agreement.

Applications

Short Number Addressing is vital within TETRA digital trunked radio systems, widely used in public safety, transport, utilities, and industrial environments. Practical applications include:

  • Rapid Call Initiation: Field personnel can swiftly contact teams or specific individuals using short, memorable numbers.
  • Dispatch Efficiency: Dispatchers and operators enhance workflow and safety by reducing dialing complexity and minimizing response times in critical scenarios.
  • Customizable Service Profiles: User groups or roles can be assigned different short numbers and corresponding telecommunication or supplementary service profiles, optimizing operational flexibility.
  • Network Scalability: As organizations grow or reconfigure, the ability to quickly adapt group or individual addressing without restructuring underlying network identities supports scalable and manageable communications.

By providing an intuitive method for address management, SNA helps organizations maintain effective communication protocols in demanding operational settings.

Related Standards

SIST ETS 300 392-10-7 E1:2003 is one part of a comprehensive series governing TETRA Voice plus Data systems. Relevant and related standards include:

  • SIST ETS 300 392-10 (all parts): Covering general network design, air interface, interworking, gateways, security, management services, performance objectives, and additional supplementary services stages.
  • ETSI EN 300 392-2 (TETRA Voice plus Data - Air Interface): Specifies the over-the-air communication protocols.
  • ITU-T Recommendation Z.100: Provides the Specification and Description Language (SDL) used for service modeling.
  • CCITT Recommendation I.130: Outlines methods for characterizing telecommunication services in digital networks.

Together, these standards ensure interoperability, reliability, and security of TETRA-based communication systems across European and international markets.

For organizations deploying TETRA systems, adherence to SIST ETS 300 392-10-7 E1:2003 ensures efficient, user-friendly, and harmonized communication through robust short number addressing practices.

1 Scope
This European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) defines the stage 1 specifications of the Short
Number Addressing (SNA) supplementary service for the Trans-European Trunked RAdio (TETRA) as
provided by European operators. Stage 1 is an overall service description from the users point of view but
does not deal with the details of the human interface itself.
This ETS specifies the service description of the supplementary service and the procedures to be
expected with successful and unsuccessful outcomes. In addition the ETS specifies the interactions with
other TETRA supplementary services and inter-working considerations.
Charging principles are outside the scope of this ETS.
The Short Number Addressing (SNA) supplementary service enables the served user to send an
abbreviated number instead of a full identity to the infrastructure and additionally SNA may either invoke or
suppress other supplementary services.
