General Information

Abstract

A review of the previous publication has identified a small number of errata, spelling or missing terms. With the publication of DTG D-Book 7 part A v2 a small number of corrigenda have been identified that will improve the comprehension of the specification which we propose to apply. DTG D-Book 7 part B includes a specification for signalling MHEG via AIT tables and launching applications in other presentation systems within a device. We propose these as additional specifications to promote co-existence of MHEG with other Connected TV APIs such as HbbTV, along with an ETSI published MIME type for MHEG.

Overview

kSIST prES 202 184 V2.3.1:2013 - MHEG-5 Broadcast Profile, published by SIST, defines requirements, updates, and corrections for the use of the MHEG-5 profile in digital broadcast environments. This standard addresses key errata from previous versions and introduces clarifications and improvements driven by the DTG D-Book 7, including improved mechanisms for application signalling, coexistence with other Connected TV systems (such as HbbTV), and the use of AIT tables for application launching. It aims to facilitate the robust deployment of interactive TV and broadcast data applications across a range of digital terrestrial and IP TV platforms.

Key Topics

  • Corrections and Clarifications: The document includes critical errata and corrigenda to increase specification comprehension and interoperability.
  • AIT Table Signalling: Outlines support for Application Information Table (AIT) as a method of signalling MHEG-5 applications, enabling seamless application lifecycle management.
  • Support for Connected TV APIs: Adds guidelines for coexistence with Connected TV middleware like HbbTV, promoting hybrid broadcast-broadband deployments.
  • Transport and Content Formats: Covers transport protocols, static and streaming content formats (such as PNG, MPEG-2, and monomedia audio/text), and resident font requirements.
  • Application Lifecycle: Details launching, terminating, context, persistent storage, user input, and keeping applications active across channel/service changes.
  • Security Considerations: Addresses secure interaction channel use and relevant data handling practices.
  • MIME Type for MHEG: Recommends the integration of the ETSI-published MIME type to foster compatibility in multimedia environments.

Applications

Implementing the MHEG-5 Broadcast Profile is essential in the following areas:

  • Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT): Ensures consistent interactive service delivery for DVB networks and enhances the viewer’s experience through broadcast-triggered applications.
  • Hybrid Broadcast and Broadband TV: Facilitates the deployment of interactive TV services that coexist with or transition to broadband-based environments such as HbbTV.
  • IP TV Systems: Supports IP-based content dissemination and hybrid receivers by clearly defining application signalling via AIT tables.
  • Set-Top Boxes and Smart TVs: Provides the technical foundation for manufacturers and service providers to offer interactive functionality, including electronic program guides, multimedia delivery, voting, educational content, and targeted advertising.
  • Broadcast Application Development: Assists developers by standardizing application models, lifecycle management, content formats, and user input handling.

Related Standards

Adhering to the MHEG-5 Broadcast Profile ensures compatibility with a variety of international standards and broadcasting environments:

  • ETSI ES 202 184: The core specification for the MHEG-5 Broadcast Profile.
  • D-Book 7 (DTG): Specifications for UK DTT receivers, including A and B parts relevant to MHEG, signalling, and hybrid TV.
  • ETSI TS 102 796: The HbbTV specification for hybrid broadcast-broadband TV applications.
  • DVB Standards: Including DVB-T/T2 for terrestrial broadcasting and DVB-I for IP-based delivery.
  • MPEG Standards: For audio and video encoding within MHEG-5 applications.
  • Other Middleware Standards: Including interactions with CI+ (Common Interface Plus), HTML-based engines, and various Connected TV APIs.

Practical Value

By implementing the updated MHEG-5 Broadcast Profile, broadcasters, manufacturers, and service providers can ensure:

  • Improved interoperability between MHEG-5, HbbTV, and other interactive TV technologies.
  • Reliable application triggering and management, supporting a wide range of broadcast and IP services.
  • Future-proofing of devices in dynamic digital TV ecosystems by adhering to relevant European broadcast and multimedia standards.
  • Lowered development and integration costs through clearer specifications and enhanced coexistence mechanisms.
