Mountaineering equipment - Individual safety systems for rope courses - Safety requirements and test methods

This document specifies safety requirements and test methods for components of an individual safety system for protection against a fall from height used in permanent and mobile rope courses as defined in EN 15567-1.
The products considered in this standard are not intended to limit, by themselves, the deceleration of the fall of the user, as defined in EN 15567-1. For this requirement, it is essential to consider the whole ropes course system.
Safety lines and harness are not covered in this standard.

1. Replace "EN 15567-1" twice with "EN 15567-1:2015+A1:2020";
2. Replace "standard" with "document" (twice in this clause).

Overview

EN 17109:2020/FprA1 (CEN) covers mountaineering equipment - individual safety systems for rope courses - safety requirements and test methods. This draft amendment updates the 2020 document and clarifies scope and test requirements for components of an individual safety system (ISS) used to protect users from falls on permanent and mobile rope courses defined in EN 15567‑1:2015+A1:2020. The document focuses on ISS components (e.g., MCDs, lanyards, connectors and related fittings) rather than on safety lines or harnesses, and emphasizes that individual products are not, by themselves, intended to limit fall deceleration - the whole ropes course system must be considered.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope updates: references to EN 15567‑1 updated to EN 15567‑1:2015+A1:2020; wording changed from “standard” to “document” in clause 1.
  • Normative references: addition of EN 362:2004 (connectors) and multiple cross‑references updated to reflect A1 amendments.
  • Use of certified connectors: Connectors certified to EN 12275:2013 or EN 362:2004 may be used in ISS without additional compliance to this document (see clause 4.1), with manufacturer guidance.
  • Test methods and strength:
    • Transversal static strength testing references clarified to specific subclauses (5.3.5.1–5.3.5.2).
    • When tested per 5.3.5.2, the registered maximum transverse strength shall not be below 6 kN.
    • Multiple foreseeable loading positions must be tested for static and deformation tests where applicable.
  • Design and marking: requirements for non‑openable connections within reach of the user; manufacturer’s instructions and information must be provided (replaces former “information supplied by the manufacturer”). Marking references updated to EN 17109:2020+A1:2023.
  • Documentation changes: new and revised clauses for manual extraction, deformation, handling and static strength tests; Annexes updated to restrict some compatibility tests to categories D and E MCDs.

Applications and users

This document is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of ISS components (MCDs, lanyards, connectors, pulleys)
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing safety and strength testing
  • Rope course designers, installers and operators who need to ensure component compatibility and safe system integration
  • Regulatory and certification authorities assessing PPE and recreational safety equipment

Practical benefits include harmonised safety requirements, clearer test methods, and improved manufacturer guidance to support safer rope‑course installations.
