NOTE 1   The tensile properties, more particularly the tensile stress, the elongation and energy, at the yield point and on fracture, are customarily used as a criterion for assessing the cohesion performance of these materials.
NOTE 2   The test method described in EN 13589 [1] is an alternate test method to determine the tensile properties of bituminous binders.
WARNING — The use of this document can involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This document does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this document to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Overview

kSIST FprEN 13587:2026 specifies a standardized method for determining the tensile properties of bituminous binders, notably including polymer-modified bitumens. Developed by SIST and prepared under CEN/TC 336, this European Standard applies to unaged, aged, residual, and recovered bituminous binders through use of a tensile test method. The parameters obtained, such as tensile stress, elongation, and cohesion energy at critical points (yield and fracture), are essential for evaluating the cohesion and performance of bituminous binders in construction and infrastructure applications.

Understanding the tensile properties of bituminous materials helps assess their quality, durability, and suitability for use in demanding environments like roads, bridges, and waterproofing systems. This standard supersedes EN 13587:2016, aligning practices across European laboratories and organizations for consistent and reliable test results.

Key Topics

  • Tensile Test Method: Detailed procedure for preparing specimens and conducting tensile tests at controlled temperatures using specific apparatus, with results expressed in terms of stress, elongation, and energy.
  • Application Scope: Covers polymer-modified bitumens and other types, with emphasis on samples in different conditions (unaged, aged, recovered).
  • Critical Parameters: Focuses on measurable properties such as:
    • Maximum tensile stress
    • Elongation at yield and fracture
    • Cohesion energy at standardized elongation (typically at 400%)
  • Apparatus and Calibration: Guidance on necessary equipment, including clamping jaws, temperature-controlled chambers, extensometers, and specimen moulds. The use of pneumatic clamping jaws is recommended for uniform pressure and reliable results.
  • Precision and Reporting: Defines repeatability and reproducibility criteria, and outlines requirements for test reporting, including details of sample identification, equipment, conditions, and any deviations.

Applications

The tensile properties determined by this standard are critical for:

  • Pavement Engineering: Evaluating the performance of bituminous binders in asphalt and road construction, particularly in applications where flexibility, durability, and crack resistance are essential.
  • Quality Control: Serving as a robust method for manufacturers and laboratories to assess the mechanical characteristics of bituminous binders during production, formulation, or after aging/simulation tests.
  • Compliance and Specification: Supporting compliance with European and international requirements, especially for polymer modified bitumens where cohesion at certain elongations is a specification criterion (e.g., as referenced in EN 14023).
  • Research and Development: Facilitating the development of new formulations by quantifying the effects of additives or modifiers on binder performance.
  • Recycled and Reclaimed Materials: Assessing the performance of binders recovered from reclaimed asphalt or post-service pavements.

Related Standards

This standard interfaces with several key documents in the bituminous materials sector:

  • EN 58 - Bitumen and bituminous binders - Sampling bituminous binders
  • EN 12594 - Bitumens and bituminous binders - Preparation of test samples
  • EN 12597 - Bitumens and bituminous binders - Terminology
  • EN ISO 527 (all parts) - Plastics - Determination of tensile properties
  • ISO 5893 - Rubber and plastics test equipment - Tensile test method
  • EN 13589 - Determination of tensile properties by force ductility, as an alternate method
  • EN 14023 - Specification framework for polymer modified bitumens

By adhering to kSIST FprEN 13587:2026, laboratories and manufacturers ensure the consistent measurement of key mechanical properties, supporting durability and performance in every application where bituminous binders are used. This reinforces quality and safety across critical infrastructure projects, meeting the strict demands of both regulators and end users.

4 Principle
A specimen, held by its ends between two jaws, is extended in a chamber (5.2), regulated at the test
temperature, at a constant speed until a given elongation or fracture is achieved. In general, the stress and the
elongation are noted at the flowing thresholds: at an elongation of 400 % and at breaking.
The deformation energy, E , is determined from the recordings of the tensile curve (see Figures A.1) obtained,
i
in accordance with the procedure described in Clause 7, by calculating the area delimited by:
— the abscissa axes corresponding to elongations;
— the recorded curve (force versus elongation);
— a parallel to the ordinate axis which passes by a given elongation or the breaking point (see Figure A.2).
*
The cohesion energy, E , is obtained as the quotient of the deformation energy at 400 % elongation (250 mm
i
for H2 type specimen final length) and the initial cross section of the test specimen.
