Overview

EN IEC 62868-2-2:2021/A1:2025 is the CENELEC adoption of IEC amendment IEC 62868-2-2:2020/AMD1:2025. It defines particular safety requirements for integrated OLED modules used in general lighting. This amendment updates terminology, references Part 1 (general requirements and tests), and adds classification and installation guidance specific to integrated OLED modules. It was approved in June 2025 and national implementation/withdrawal timelines are set by CENELEC.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and references
    • Complements IEC 62868-1:2020 and its Amendment 1 (IEC 62868-1:2020/AMD1:2024) for general safety, tests, and ambient/mounting conditions.
    • Includes normative references to IEC 61347-1:2015 for resistance to heat and flame/ignition.
  • Definitions and module types
    • New or revised terms: independent OLED, integral OLED, built‑in OLED (definitions provided in the amendment).
    • Classification by power-supply method and installation (Annex B): OLED tiles, panels (rigid/flexible), semi‑integrated (OLEDsi), integrated (OLEDi); installation classes: integral, built‑in, independent.
  • Testing and construction
    • Tests shall be conducted at the design voltage or current unless otherwise specified.
    • Construction, marking, terminals, protection against accidental contact, thermal stress, corrosion resistance and earthing requirements reference Part 1 and its amendment.
    • Marking durability and legibility requirements are reinforced by Part 1/AMD1.
  • Safety-critical areas
    • Thermal management and thermal stress requirements follow Part 1.
    • Photobiological safety is covered via Part 1 clauses.
    • Resistance to heat, flame and ignition is aligned with IEC 61347-1 provisions.

Practical applications

  • Provides the safety and test framework for designing, manufacturing and certifying integrated OLED lighting modules used in general luminaires, architectural panels, and lighting fixtures where the OLED is part of the luminaire assembly.
  • Guides decisions on product marking, mounting, thermal design, and safety testing prior to market entry in Europe.
  • Helps ensure consistent classification for product families: tiles, panels, semi‑integrated and integrated modules.

Who should use this standard

  • OLED module and luminaire manufacturers
  • Product design and safety engineers
  • Conformity assessment bodies and test laboratories
  • Certification agencies, compliance officers and regulatory authorities
  • Procurement/specification authors for architectural and commercial lighting projects

Related standards

  • EN IEC 62868-1 (General requirements and tests) and IEC 62868-1:2020/AMD1:2024
  • IEC 61347-1 (heat and flame/ignition tests)
  • IEC 62868-2-3 (flexible OLED tiles and panels) and IEC 62868-2-4 (rigid OLED tiles and panels) - listed in the bibliography

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to
