Overview

SIST EN ISO 22553-10:2023, titled Paints and varnishes - Electro-deposition coatings - Part 10: Edge protection (ISO 22553-10:2022), is a key European standard adopted by CEN that specifies a test method for evaluating the corrosion protection performance of electro-deposition coatings on edges and stamping burrs. This standard plays a crucial role in quality assurance for coatings used in various industrial sectors.

Developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 35 and adopted by CEN/TC 139, this standard is applicable primarily to the automotive industry but extends to other fields such as aerospace, agriculture, consumer products, radiators, and chiller units. It ensures that electro-deposition coatings provide effective protection against corrosion, especially at vulnerable edges and burrs formed in metal stamping processes.

Key Topics

  • Test Methodology: The standard defines a rigorous test protocol involving the preparation of electrically conductive test panels with standardized stamped holes containing burrs. Electro-deposition coatings are applied under controlled lab conditions that simulate real industrial processes.

  • Corrosion Testing: Following coating deposition and curing, the panels undergo corrosion tests such as salt spray (ISO 9227) or cyclic corrosion tests (ISO 11997 series). These tests simulate aggressive environmental exposure to evaluate the coatings' edge protection capability.

  • Evaluation and Rating: Corrosion at edges is visually assessed based on ISO 13076 and defects rated according to ISO 4628-1. The rating system ranges from 0 (no rust) to 5 (extensive rust covering more than 75% of edges), providing a quantifiable measure of edge protection effectiveness.

  • Test Equipment and Panels: The standard specifies the use of laboratory deposition tanks with appropriate anode-cathode arrangements, precise temperature controls, film thickness measurement devices, and standardized test panels to ensure reproducibility and reliability.

  • Repeatability: Testing is carried out in triplicate to validate the consistency of results, emphasizing the standard's focus on accuracy and repeatability.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 22553-10:2023 is essential for industries requiring high-performance protective coatings to extend the life and durability of metal components. Key applications include:

  • Automotive Industry: Ensuring corrosion protection on vehicle body parts is critical, especially at edges exposed to the environment, to maintain structural integrity and appearance.

  • Aerospace and Agriculture: Components exposed to harsh conditions benefit from validated edge protection for safety and longevity.

  • Consumer Products and Radiators: Enhances the durability of coated parts that experience mechanical stress and environmental exposure.

  • Chiller Units and Industrial Equipment: Protects metal components from corrosion caused by moisture and chemicals during service.

This standard helps manufacturers, quality controllers, and coating formulators optimize coating processes and materials to achieve superior corrosion resistance, reducing maintenance costs and improving product reliability.

Related Standards

To fully implement SIST EN ISO 22553-10:2023, it is often used alongside the following standards that complement testing and terminology:

  • ISO 22553-1: Electro-deposition coatings vocabulary-provides definitions related to e-coatings.

  • ISO 1514: Standard panels for testing paints and varnishes-used for panel preparation.

  • ISO 2808: Methods to determine film thickness of coatings.

  • ISO 4628-1: Evaluation of coating degradation and defect designation system.

  • ISO 9227: Salt spray corrosion tests-a common accelerated corrosion test.

  • ISO 11997-1 & ISO 11997-3: Methods for cyclic corrosion testing of coatings in automotive applications.

  • ISO 13076: Lighting and procedure for visual assessments of coatings.

  • ISO 4618: Basic terms and definitions for paints and varnishes.

Employing these related standards ensures a comprehensive and harmonized approach to coating testing and quality assurance.

SIST EN ISO 22553-10:2023 is an integral standard for stakeholders in industrial coating applications, ensuring rigorous assessment of edge protection by electro-deposition coatings. Its adoption supports sustainable production by enhancing corrosion resistance, safety, and the lifespan of metal components across a wide range of sectors.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
