oSIST prEN IEC 63241-1:2026 is the Slovenian version of the draft European Standard prEN IEC 63241-1:2026 issued by SIST within CENELEC. It sets general requirements for measuring dust from electric motor-operated tools powered from mains or batteries, with or without a dust extraction unit, where mineral dust containing silica or wood dust is expected. It is written for manufacturers, test laboratories, and others who need comparable dust emission results.
What does oSIST prEN IEC 63241-1:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN IEC 63241-1:2026 specifies the general procedure for dust measurement on electric motor-operated tools. The method is intended to give comparable dust concentration results under standardized conditions, not to describe actual use at every workplace.
The standard applies to tools used with mains or battery supply and to tools with or without a dust extraction unit. It is used together with EN IEC 63241-2 and EN IEC 63241-3, which add or modify requirements for specific product types.

The document is organized into six clauses:
- Scope
- Normative references
- Terms and definitions
- Test procedure
- Instrumentation
- Information to be reported
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN IEC 63241-1:2026?
Clause 4 makes the test a controlled workplace simulation. The tool is tested under working conditions in a defined test room, and the result is based on dust concentration, not only on whether dust is visible.
Clause 4.2 defines the test setup. The room must be clean, free from other fixed air-polluting sources, and without ventilation during the test. Dust samplers are worn in the operator’s upper chest zone, and for bench work the distance between the workpiece and sampler intake openings is set before testing. In practice, this is what makes the measurement repeatable from one lab to another.
Clause 4.3 sets the operating conditions. Tests run at 15 °C to 30 °C and at relative humidity up to 75 %. A normal test consists of five cycles of 10 minutes working time and 2 minutes rest time, with longer or split cycles allowed for some battery tools. The tool must be run with the correct supply, speed setting, accessory, and work material, and all test parameters are kept within ±2 %.
Clause 4.3 also controls dust extraction units and batteries. External dust extraction units are used and maintained as instructed by the manufacturer, and integral units are changed or emptied according to their instructions. Battery tools must use fully conditioned batteries, with a rest period after charging, and detachable or separable battery packs are selected according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This matters because the power source and extraction system can change the measured dust level.
Clause 4.4 defines acceptance of a test series. The three test results are checked by the coefficient of variation, and the series is accepted only when that variation is below 0.5. That gives users a simple stability check before they report results.
Clause 5 sets measurement accuracy. Voltage, temperature, humidity, and other electrical conditions have specified instrument tolerances, so the measuring system itself does not distort the result. Clause 6 then requires a detailed report covering the tool, accessories, test material, extraction unit, room setup, instruments, environmental data, dust concentrations, mean values, and uncertainty.
What terms does oSIST prEN IEC 63241-1:2026 define?
- accessory - a device attached only to the output mechanism of the tool.
- dust extraction unit - a suction device connected to the tool’s dust outlet or dust capturing attachment to collect emitted dust.
- dust sampler - a device that collects inhalable or respirable dust by drawing dust-laden air through a filter.
- inhalable dust - the dust fraction that can enter the respiratory system according to ISO 7708:1995.
- respirable dust - the dust fraction that can reach the alveoli and bronchia according to ISO 7708:1995.
- detachable battery pack - a battery in a separate enclosure that is removed from the tool for charging.
- separable battery pack - a battery in a separate enclosure connected to the tool by a cord.
Who uses oSIST prEN IEC 63241-1:2026?
Manufacturers of electric motor-operated tools use this standard to measure and declare dust emission data. Testing laboratories use it to set up the room, samplers, operating conditions, and report format. Quality managers, certification bodies, and buyers use it when comparing tools of the same type or reviewing evidence for dust emission claims. It is also relevant where dust exposure is assessed in a preliminary way for workplace use.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN IEC 63241-1:2026?
- EN 1093-9:1998 and EN 1093-9:1998/A1:2008 - provide the test-room method for measuring airborne pollutant concentration.
- EN 13205 (all parts) - gives sampler performance assessment for airborne particle concentration measurement.
- ISO 7708:1995 - defines the inhalable and respirable particle size fractions used by the method.
- EN IEC 63241-2 - adds product-specific requirements for the relevant tool type.
- EN IEC 63241-3 - adds product-specific requirements for the relevant tool type.
What does the oSIST prEN IEC 63241-1:2026 document contain?
The document contains the general test procedure, the test-room and sampler layout, the operating conditions for mains and battery tools, the instrumentation tolerances, and the reporting checklist. Figures 1 and 2 show sampler positions for measuring one dust fraction or two dust fractions. Clause 4.4 gives the acceptance calculation for repeatability, and Clause 6 defines the report content used for declarations, comparisons, and test records.

INTRODUCTION
Inhalable dust emitted by electric motor-operated tools can present a hazard to the operator
and other exposed persons.
Therefore, this document specifies a procedure to measure the dust concentration produced
by an electric power tool under standardized conditions representing typical applications.
However, the dust concentration during actual use of the power tool can differ from the dust
concentration measured in accordance with this document depending on the ways in which the
tool is used.
The results of dust measurements can be used
– for a declaration of the dust emission;
– for comparing the dust emission from tools of the same type; or
– in a preliminary assessment of dust exposure at a workplace.
For all purposes, it is important to specify measurement procedures with known accuracy so
that the results of measurements taken by different laboratories can be compared.
The measurements of dust concentration are made in accordance with EN 1093-9:1998 and
EN 1093-9:1998/A1:2008 for the test room.
