Overview

kSIST FprEN IEC 60794-1-302:2026 specifies the basic optical cable test procedures for assessing the dimensions and geometry of optical fibre ribbons using a visual method, known as Method G2. Developed by SIST and aligned with IEC standards, this document establishes consistent requirements for evaluating the physical structure of optical fibre ribbons. The standard is applicable to ribbon structures in optical fibre cables used for telecommunications, as well as cables combining optical fibres and electrical conductors, including edge-bonded, encapsulated, or partially bonded ribbons.

Monitoring the width, height, and fibre alignment is essential to ensure the quality and consistent performance of optical fibre cables in high-speed data and communication networks. The visual test method defined here supports manufacturing process control and type testing, contributing to global interoperability and reliability in fibre optic infrastructure.

Key Topics

This standard covers:

  • Test Objectives: Measurement of ribbon geometry, specifically width, height, and fibre alignment, to validate manufacturing processes.
  • Applicability: Relevant for optical fibre ribbons used in telecommunication systems and mixed cable types.
  • Sample Selection: Methods for choosing representative and statistically independent samples for testing.
  • Measurement Apparatus: Use of microscopes or profile projectors for precise dimension analysis.
  • Procedure Details:
    • Preparation and handling of test samples to avoid altering ribbon structure.
    • Two alternative visual methods (Method 1 and Method 2) for examining cross-sections or stripped ribbon ends.
  • Measurement Parameters:
    • Width and Height: The smallest rectangle enclosing the ribbon cross-section.
    • Fibre Alignment: Measurement of planarity and horizontal separation between fibres.
  • Specification Requirements: Guidance on permissible values, sample quantity, and reporting of results.

Applications

Adhering to IEC 60794-1-302 delivers practical benefits across various stages of the optical cable lifecycle:

  • Quality assurance: Enables manufacturers to maintain strict control over the geometrical properties of fibre ribbons, directly influencing performance such as splicability and ease of handling.
  • Type testing: Provides standardized procedures for verifying new cable designs before mass production or deployment, ensuring global alignment and reducing risks of incompatibility in international projects.
  • Process control: Supports ongoing monitoring in production environments, helping to detect process deviations early and refine manufacturing settings.
  • Interoperability: Ensures cables meet recognized geometric standards, which is crucial when combining components from multiple suppliers in large-scale fibre optic networks.
  • Research and development: Facilitates the design and assessment of advanced cable and ribbon structures by offering clear testing benchmarks.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to optical fibre cable performance and testing, consider the following related standards:

  • IEC 60794-1-2: General guidance on basic optical cable test procedures, offering foundational instructions referenced by this standard.
  • IEC 60794-1-31: Specific test procedures for optical fibre ribbons, providing detailed methods and requirements for ribbon elements.
  • IEC 60794 Series: A family of standards covering various aspects of optical fibre cable design, performance, and testing.
  • ISO/IEC directives: Governing documents that outline procedures and terminology for international standardization.

By implementing kSIST FprEN IEC 60794-1-302:2026, organizations ensure globally recognized quality and compatibility for optical fibre ribbon geometry, supporting reliable, high-performance broadband and communication networks.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
