This Technical Report describes the following:
a) the functional elements and structure of the cabling, external to homes, supporting community
antenna television (CATV) and master antenna television/satellite master antenna television
(MATV/SMATV) networks in accordance with EN 60728-1;
b) the location and accommodation of the home network interface (HNI) in accordance with EN 60728-1;
c) requirements for additional cabling performance requirements (i.e. insertion loss slope between
47 MHz and 862 MHz) and necessary amendments of the reference implementations of generic
cabling within the home in accordance with EN 50173-4 in order to support the CATV, MATV/SMATV
networks in accordance with EN 60728-1.
Safety (electrical safety and protection, optical power, fire, etc.) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
requirements are outside the scope of this Technical Report and are covered by standards and
regulations. However information given in this Technical Report may be of assistance in meeting these
standards and regulations.

To tehnično poročilo opisuje:
a) operativne elemente in strukture polaganja kablov, zunanjih do hišnih, ki podpirajo skupnostna antenska televizijska (CATV) in glavna antenska televizijska/satelitska glavna antenska televizijska (MATV/SMATV) omrežja v skladu z EN 60728-1,
b) lokacijo in namestitev domačega omrežnega vmesnika (HNI) v skladu z EN 60728-1,
c) zahteve za dodatne delovne zahteve polaganja kablov (tj. notranje izgube zaradi nagiba med 47 MHz 862 MHz) in potrebne popravke referenčne izvedbe univerzalnega polaganja kablov znotraj domov v skladu z EN 50173-4, za podpiranje CATV, MATV/SMATV omrežja v skladu z EN 60728-1.

Introduction
EN 50173-4 specifies generic cabling in homes, installed to support one or more of the following groups
of applications and based upon balanced and coaxial cabling as appropriate:
a) Information and Communication Technologies (ICT);
b) Broadcast and Communication Technologies (BCT);
c) Command, Controls and Communications in Buildings (CCCB).
EN 50173-4 also provides requirements for backbone cabling subsystems within premises containing
multiple homes by reference to:
1) EN 50173-1 for cabling to support ICT applications;
2) standards of the EN 50083 and EN 60728 series to support BCT applications.
EN 50083 and EN 60728 standards deal with cable networks including equipment and associated
methods of measurement for headend reception, processing and distribution of television signals, sound
signals and their associated data signals and for processing, interfacing and transmitting all kinds of
signals for interactive services using all applicable transmission media including community antenna
television (CATV) and master antenna television/satellite master antenna television (MATV/SMATV)
networks.
This Technical Report describes the following:
– the functional elements and structure of the cabling, external to homes, supporting community

(MATV/SMATV) networks in accordance with EN 60728-1;

3 Definitions and abbreviations
3.1 Definitions
For the purposes of this document the following definitions apply in addition to those of EN 50173-1 and
EN 50173-4.

branch feeder
feeder used for connecting a distribution point to a building network interface (BNI) or home network
interface (HNI), as appropriate

building network
network for transmission of television signal, sound signals and interactive services inside a multi-dwelling
building (excluding the home networks within the dwellings)

interface between external network and the building network within a multi-dwelling building for the
network for the transmission of television signal, sound signals and interactive services

services up to the coaxial RF interface (input and/or output) of the terminal equipment. It may comprise
active equipment, passive equipment, cables and connectors

4 Cabling structure
4.1 General
This document describes implementations of generic cabling in homes in accordance with EN 50173-4
and their connection to external cabling in order to support the BCT applications of Annex F of EN 50173-
1 and in accordance with the EN 60728 series of standards.
The delivery of BCT applications to support CATV or MATV/SMATV networks in accordance with the
EN 60728 series of standards to the home, independent of the premises that accommodate the home, is
described in terms of:
a) the functional elements required;
b) the cabling subsystems used to provide connections between the functional elements;
c) the interface (HNI) at which the cabling in accordance with EN 50173-4 is connected;
d) any additional application-specific functional elements within the home.

4.2 Functional elements of networks in accordance with EN 60728
EN 60728-1 describes the functional elements to support BCT applications in the case of CATV or
MATV/SMATV cable networks and includes the main functional elements described in Table 1.

4.3 Cabling subsystems of networks in accordance with EN 60728
4.3.1 General
EN 60728-1 describes the interconnection of the functional elements as shown in schematic form in
Figure 1 for CATV cable networks and in Figure 2 for MATV/SMATV cable networks.

4.3.2 External cabling subsystems
For CATV cable networks the signals received by remote and/or local headends are delivered through
super trunk feeder cables to hub headends. The signals are then subdivided and delivered to distribution
points (DPs) via trunk feeder cables. A branch feeder cable connects each home network interface (HNI)
or building network interface (BNI) (in the case of multi dwelling premises) to a DP.
For MATV/SMATV cable networks the signals received by the antenna system are fed to the headend. A
branch feeder cable connects each home network interface (HNI) or building network interface (BNI) (in
the case of multi dwelling premises) to the headend.
4.3.3 Building backbone subsystem
Where the premises served by the external cabling subsystems accommodate multiple homes, the BNI is
connected to the HNI either via:
a) a subscriber feeder cable;
b) a spur feeder cable to a floor distributor and then a subscriber feeder cable.
4.3.4 Home cabling subsystem
The signals delivered at the HNI are fed to the terminal equipment connected to the system outlet (SO)
through the home network comprising cabling and optional splitter/amplifier equipment.
The home cabling subsystem has different configurations depending on the extension and on the
applications made available at the home premises (see Figure 3). Various types of home networking for
home premises are described in EN 60728-1-1.
This technical report describes the delivery of the signals from the HNI to the SO using cabling in
accordance with EN 50173-4.
NOTE The home cabling subsystem defined and described in EN 50173-4 forms part of the home cabling subsystem as shown in
Figure 1 and Figure 2.

4.4 Accommodation of functional elements
4.4.1 Headend and antenna systems
The headend systems for CATV cable networks are typically located in equipment rooms that provide all
the facilities (space, power, environmental control etc.) for passive components, active devices and
connection to local and/or remote antenna systems.
The headend systems for MATV/SMATV cable networks may be located in a small room or a dedicated
space, where all the facilities (space, power, etc.) for passive components, active devices and connection
to the antenna system are provided. Examples of headend and requirements for headend equipment are
described in EN 60728-5.
The installation of equipment shall be in accordance with EN 60728-11.
4.4.2 Building network
Within multi dwelling premises, the BNI and FD are typically located in equipment rooms that should
provide all the facilities (space, power, environmental control etc.) for passive components and active
devices. Each equipment room should have direct access to the relevant cabling subsystems.
Where the functional elements share the same space as the BD and/or FDs of generic cabling systems in
accordance with the EN 50173 series of standards; the requirements for the accommodation of
distributors are specified in EN 50173-1.
Requirements for building entrance facilities are specified in the EN 50174 series of standards.
NOTE The location of BNI and building entrance facilities which shall be provided may be subject to national or local regulation.

4.4.3 Pathways and pathway systems
See the EN 50174 series of standards.
4.4.4 HNI
The use of generic cabling in accordance with EN 50173-4 to support BCT applications in accordance
with the EN 60728 series of standards (CATV or MATV/SMATV networks) requires the HNI to be located
within the home distributor (HD).
The requirements for the HD are specified in EN 50173-4.
The requirements for the accommodation of the HD are specified in EN 50174-2.
Requirements for home entrance facilities are specified in the EN 50174-2.
NOTE The location of HNI and home entrance facilities which shall be provided may be subject to national or local regulation.
4.5 Interfaces
4.5.1 BCT applications in accordance with EN 60728-1
EN 60728-1 defines signal requirements at the HNI and the SO (supporting information is provided in
Annex A).
4.5.2 Generic cabling in accordance with EN 50173-4

Figure 4 shows the general implementation of generic cabling within a home in accordance with
EN 50173-4 to support BCT applications.

4.5.2.2 Slope
The slope of the cabling between the HNI and the BO is critical for the support of BCT applications in
accordance with EN 60728-1. The interfaces for the calculation of slope are shown in Figure 5, showing a
direct connection between the HNI and BO, and Figure 6 showing the installation of splitter/amplifier
equipment (EQP) co-located with the HD.
Within EN 50173-4, the permanent link of Figure 4 is constructed from either balanced or coaxial cabling
components. Within the EN 60728 series standards the HNI is a coaxial interface.
In order to utilise a balanced cabling permanent link in installations according to Figure 5, a balun is
required between the HNI and the panel connection of the permanent link, and between the BO and
terminal equipment (TE), unless the TE has a balanced cabling interface.
Within installations in accordance with Figure 6, a coaxial cord connects the HNI to the EQP.

In order to utilise a balanced cabling permanent link in installations according to Figure 6 a balun is
required between the BO and terminal equipment (TE), unless the TE has a balanced cabling interface
and either
a) the EQP has a balanced cabling interface, or
b) a balun is required between the EQP and the panel connection of the permanent link.

NOTE Where the home contains one or more secondary home distributors (SHD) the definitions of the channel, permanent link
and the slope requirement are modified accordingly.
The insertion loss and slope of cabling is dependent upon the lengths and attenuation specifications of
the cables, cords and, where separately specified, the connecting hardware. Clause 5 defines the
applicable slope requirements and Clause 6 describes reference implementations of cabling in
accordance with EN 50173-4 that supports the relevant slope requirements.
4.6 Dimensioning and configuring
4.6.1 Home network interface
The performance at the home network interface (HNI) (signal levels, slope, C/N, etc.) shall be taken into
account and considered as part of the initial design and implementation of customer applications.
The type of the CATV/MATV/SMATV cable network may be governed by national regulations, in which
case they shall be taken into account in the design of the generic cabling.
5 Slope requirements
5.1.1 Channels and links in accordance with EN 50173-4
5.1.1.1 General
Annex F of EN 50173-1 defines a series of supported BCT applications that have a slope requirement
between the slope boundaries of Figure 5 and Figure 6 (i.e. HNI-BO) of -5 dB. These applications are

a) BCT-x-L permanent links without any slope compensation;
b) BCT-x-M permanent links with a 6 dB slope compensation (i.e. introduced by equipment installed in
the HD, e. g. a passive splitter or active amplifier);
c) BCT-x-H permanent links only where specific transmission engineering has been applied.
EN 50173-4 specifies limits for the transmission performance of permanent links using BCT-B and BCT-C
cabling by reference to EN 50173-1. These limits and the slopes associated with these transmission
performance specifications are detailed in Table 2 for BCT-B cabling and Table 3 for BCT-C cabling.
