Overview
EN 1052-3:2002/A1:2007 (amendment to EN 1052-3:2002) is a CEN document that specifies laboratory test methods for determining the initial shear strength of masonry. The amendment introduces an optional zero pre-compression test route and clarifies specimen preparation, loading, measurement and evaluation procedures. It is intended for use by test laboratories, designers, manufacturers and conformity assessment bodies working with masonry materials.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Two procedures defined
- Procedure A: Tests specimens at different pre-compression levels. The initial shear strength is determined by linear regression to zero pre-compression.
- Procedure B: Tests specimens at zero pre-compression (optional method). At least six specimens are required and a characteristic value is obtained by either a simple or a statistical method.
- Specimen preparation and dimensions
- Types A and B specimens are defined (see Table 2 in the standard). Where cutting of units is necessary, faces intended for mortaring must be representative of the unit.
- Loading geometry adjustment (e.g., eccentricity e = 15 mm) and other dimensional clarifications are included in the amendment.
- Loading and measurements
- Loading rates and the number of replications are specified; additional specimens may be tested until required failure types are achieved.
- Record precompression load where relevant, maximum shear force and failure mechanism for each specimen.
- Evaluation methods for Procedure B
- Simple method: Characteristic shear strength f_k = 0.8 × f_mean or the lowest individual result, whichever is lower.
- Statistical method: Log-transform individual shear strengths, compute mean and standard deviation, adjust with factor K (table provided for n = 6…20), and back-transform to obtain f_k at a 95% confidence level. K values (examples): n=6 → 2.18, n=7 → 2.08, n=8 → 2.01, up to n=20 → 1.77.
- Reporting requirements
- Test date, whether Procedure A or B was used, results (to 0.01 N/mm2), mechanisms, and indication of any lower-bound results.
Applications
- Establishing bond/shear properties of masonry assemblies for structural design and verification.
- Material qualification and quality control of units, mortars and masonry workmanship.
- Input data for structural analysis, failure investigations, and product declarations.
- Comparative testing for research and development of masonry systems.
Who uses this standard
- Accredited test laboratories and construction materials testing facilities
- Structural engineers and masonry designers
- Manufacturers of masonry units and mortars
- Certification bodies and national standards organizations (CEN/TC 125 stakeholders)
Related standards
- EN 1052 series (other parts covering strength and test methods for masonry)
