SIST EN 16066:2012
(Main)Packaging - Rigid plastic containers - PET finish 26,7 (lead 6,35)
Packaging - Rigid plastic containers - PET finish 26,7 (lead 6,35)
This European Standard specifies the dimensions of the 26,7 mm screw finish with three (3) thread starts and a 17,07 mm height for flat waters and non carbonated beverages.
This finish can be used for aseptic filling and filling with introduction of nitrogen.
This finish is designed to take a tamper evident plastic closure only. During first opening, the tamper evident band will separate from the closure shell and stay on a one way bottle neck or like bottles in the returnable market, the tamper evident band will tear but will remain connected to the closure shell.

Overview
SIST EN 16066:2012 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the precise dimensions and functional requirements for rigid plastic containers with a PET (polyethylene terephthalate) finish of 26.7 mm diameter and a thread lead of 6.35 mm. This screw finish is designed specifically for packaging flat waters and non-carbonated beverages. It ensures compatibility with tamper-evident plastic closures and supports advanced filling techniques including aseptic filling and nitrogen introduction.
The standard plays a critical role in the packaging industry by promoting uniformity and quality assurance for bottle neck finishes used across the European market, improving product safety, and enhancing consumer confidence.
Key Topics
- Finish Dimensions: The standard defines a screw finish diameter of 26.7 mm with three thread starts positioned 120° apart and a height of 17.07 mm.
- Thread Lead: The thread lead is specified at 6.35 mm per turn with detailed lead-in and run-out radii to ensure proper closure fitting and sealing.
- Surface Requirements: The sealing surfaces must be smooth and defect-free to prevent leaks. Specific limits on flash and surface tolerances are prescribed to maintain seal integrity.
- Tamper Evident Closures: SIST EN 16066:2012 mandates that only tamper-evident plastic closures can be used with this finish. The design ensures that on first opening, the tamper evident band detaches appropriately to signal product tampering.
- Compatibility with Filling Methods: The finish is suitable for aseptic bottling and filling under nitrogen, making it ideal for high-quality, preservative-free beverages.
- Dimensional Tolerances: The standard includes strict tolerances for thread alignment, diameter uniformity, and absence of overhang on the bottle neck finish, ensuring consistency and interchangeability.
Applications
- Beverage Packaging: Designed primarily for flat water and non-carbonated beverages, the finish optimizes the sealing and safety of bottled drinks.
- Aseptic and Modified Atmosphere Bottling: Enables filling processes that extend shelf life without preservatives by allowing nitrogen flushing or aseptic filling under sterile conditions.
- Tamper Evident Solutions: Facilitates consumer protection and regulatory compliance through tamper-evident design, critical in markets demanding high product integrity.
- Returnable and One-Way Bottles: Supports both returnable and disposal markets by maintaining the integrity of tamper bands upon opening, either by band separation or tearing but staying attached to the closure.
- Standardized Manufacturing: Helps manufacturers and packaging suppliers produce bottles and closures that meet consistent quality and fit requirements, streamlining supply chains across Europe.
