Overview
SIST EN 3342:2006 is a European standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) for the aerospace sector. It specifies the requirements for aluminium alloy AL-P6061 in the T4 or T42 temper, covering drawn or extruded bars and sections with a maximum cross-sectional dimension (a or D) up to 150 mm. This standard ensures uniform quality, performance, and traceability of aluminium products intended for aerospace applications, providing essential guidance for manufacturers, suppliers, and end-users involved in the aerospace industry.
Key Topics
- Material Designation: The focus material is aluminium alloy AL-P6061, used extensively in high-performance applications for its strength, lightweight properties, and corrosion resistance.
- Product Forms: Includes both drawn and extruded bars and sections. The exact condition (drawn or extruded) must be specified in the order.
- Temper Conditions: Applicable to T4 and T42 tempers, reflecting different heat treatment and mechanical property requirements.
- Dimensional Range: Products covered have a maximum cross-sectional measurement (a or D) of 150 mm or less.
- Conformance: Requirements include chemical composition, mechanical properties, quality checks for external and internal defects, and proper marking and dimensional inspection, with references to EN 4400-3 for detailed inspection and testing protocols.
- Ordering Requirements: It is mandatory to specify whether the drawn or extruded condition is required when placing orders.
Applications
SIST EN 3342:2006 is essential for:
- Aircraft Manufacturing: Used in the production of structural components where lightweight strength and consistent performance are critical, such as frames, supports, and brackets.
- Aerospace Engineering: Supports the design and selection of materials for space and aviation applications, ensuring reliability under demanding operational conditions.
- Supply Chain Compliance: Manufacturers and suppliers leverage this standard to guarantee that aluminium bars and sections meet rigorous aerospace requirements, facilitating acceptance within regulated markets.
- Quality Assurance: The standard, in conjunction with referenced documents like EN 4400-3, provides a framework for verifying mechanical properties, uniformity, and defect mitigation-vital for safety-critical aerospace parts.
Related Standards
Several related standards support and complement SIST EN 3342:2006 for a comprehensive approach to aluminium alloys in aerospace:
- EN 4258: Organization of metallic materials standardization and guidelines on the use of EN standards in the aerospace series.
- EN 4400-3: Technical specification for aluminium and aluminium alloy wrought products-specifically bars and sections, including test methods and quality requirements.
- EN 4500-2: Rules for drafting and presentation of standards for metallic materials, with specific guidance on aluminium, aluminium alloys, and magnesium alloys.
Practical Value
Adhering to the requirements of SIST EN 3342:2006 enables aerospace manufacturers and suppliers to:
- Achieve consistent product quality and traceability for aluminium alloy AL-P6061 bars and sections
- Support compliance with European and international aerospace industry standards
- Reduce risks of material failure through standardized quality controls and mechanical property requirements
- Streamline procurement processes with clear communication of product specifications and inspection criteria
By referencing this standard, stakeholders ensure their aluminium products are fit for purpose in advanced aerospace applications, supporting performance, safety, and regulatory compliance in global markets.
