SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of ETS 300 270 Edition 1 from ETSI. It defines the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) for the Physical Layer Convergence Procedure (PLCP) of a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) at 34,368 Mbit/s, in the context of a DQDB-based subnetwork. In practice, it is the document vendors, test labs, and buyers use to state and check which PLCP features an implementation supports.
What does SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003 specify?
SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003 specifies a PICS proforma for the PLCP, not the full PLCP protocol itself. It tells an implementer how to declare support for the externally observable PLCP functions defined for a MAN operating at 34,368 Mbit/s.
The document is organized into:
- Clause 1 Scope
- Clause 2 Normative references
- Clause 3 Definitions
- Clause 4 Symbols and abbreviation
- Clause 5 PICS for the PLCP for E3 based systems, with subclauses for frame format, field definitions, fault behavior, DQDB layer out of service, and framing
- History
Clause 5 uses tables and a framing state machine to turn the PLCP specification into a checklist-style conformance statement.
What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003?
The document’s main requirement is that an implementation shall conform to the functional models in ETS 300 214 for all externally observable effects. In practice, this means a supplier does not just describe the design - they must state which standardized PLCP behaviors are actually supported.
- Clause 4 defines the PICS support codes: mandatory, optional, conditional, default value defined, and not applicable. This matters because the conformance statement is filled in feature by feature, so a reviewer can see what is required, what is optional, and what depends on conditions.
- Clause 5.1 covers the E3 relationship to the PLCP, including octets, octet alignment, and octet coding. It also distinguishes the alarm indication bit and the bit reserved for national use, which matters when checking how the implementation maps payload and signaling.
- Clause 5.2 requires the PLCP frame format to follow the defined figure. This gives buyers and test teams a common reference for the frame structure that the equipment must present on the interface.
- Clause 5.3 defines the PLCP fields to be supported, including framing octets, Path Overhead Identification (POI) octets, F1, B1 with BIP-8, G1, M1 and M2, C1, Z1-Z3, and trailer octets. The notes explain default behavior when FEBE or alarm signal support is not implemented, so an evaluator can check both normal operation and fallback behavior.
- Clause 5.4 describes PLCP behavior during transmission system faults, PLCP faults, and DQDB layer faults. It requires a jam signal, detection of the jam signal over the stated time, and the use of Timer_P_x, which is important for fault handling and interoperability.
- Clause 5.5 states that when the DQDB layer is out of service, PLCP continues normal operation and relays M1 and M2 octets unmodified. This matters because a lower-layer failure does not automatically stop PLCP behavior.
- Clause 5.6 requires a Bus A and Bus B framing state machine, with a separate LSS operations table and frame timing operations table. In practice, this is the part engineers use to verify state transitions and timing behavior during implementation and testing.
What terms does SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003 define?
- Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) - a structured statement of which protocol features an implementation supports.
- Physical Layer Convergence Procedure (PLCP) - the layer that adapts traffic for the physical transmission structure of the MAN.
- Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) - the network environment for which this PLCP conformance statement is written.
- Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) - the access method used by the MAN referenced by the standard.
- Far End Block Error (FEBE) - an error-related signal mentioned in the PLCP field definitions.
- Link status signal (LSS) - the status signaling used in the framing state machine and its operations table.
- Bit Interleaved Parity-8 (BIP-8) - the parity method identified for the B1 octet.
Who uses SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003?
SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003 is used by equipment manufacturers, protocol developers, conformance test laboratories, and network operators working with MAN and DQDB-based systems. Quality managers and buyers use it to compare declared support between implementations and to check whether a product’s PLCP behavior matches the intended profile. It is also useful for engineers preparing conformance documentation or interoperability testing.
What changed in SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003 from the previous edition?
SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003 is identical to ETS 300 270 Edition 1. The document history records the first edition in March 1994 and a PDF conversion in March 1996.
Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003?
- ETS 300 214 - provides the PLCP specification that this PICS refers to and the functional models it uses for conformance.
- ETS 300 212 - defines the MAN media access control layer and physical layer specification, including the DQDB context.
- IEEE Standard 802.6 (1990) - supplies the definitions, symbols, abbreviations, and additional framing and timing references used by this ETS.
What does the SIST ETS 300 270 E1:2003 document contain?
The document contains a PICS proforma with feature-by-feature tables for E3-based PLCP support. It also includes a frame-format figure, a framing state-machine figure, and tables for field definitions, fault behavior, DQDB layer out-of-service behavior, LSS operations, and physical layer frame timing. These parts are used for implementation declarations, interoperability checks, and conformance testing.

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this ETS, the definitions as defined in IEEE Standard 802.6 [3] shall apply.
4 Symbols and abbreviation
For the purposes of this ETS, the symbols and abbreviations as defined in IEEE Standard 802.6 [3] shall
apply.
Additionally, for this PICS proforma, the following abbreviations are used in defining the support type of a
feature, parameter or capability:
m mandatory
o optional
c conditional
d default value defined
n/a not applicable
When used in the column labelled "Value" the following abbreviations are defined:
xx - yy from number xx to number yy
xx/yy either number xx or number yy applies, depending on the actual conditions
For each of the conditional items, an explanation of the parameter or capability under which the feature,
parameter or capability is mandatory is given in the Clause or subclause in which the conditional items
appear.
The notation X_ in the column "Support" means that numbers may be entered in this place pointing to notes
which indicate deviation from the standard.
