General Information
Overview
EN 60512-16-13:2008 / IEC 60512-16-13:2008 specifies a standard mechanical test method - Test 16m: Un-wrapping, solderless wrapped connections - used to determine whether a solderless wrapped (wire-wrap) connection has been made without damaging the wrapping wire. The procedure is intended for connectors for electronic equipment and covers the un-wrapping action, observations and acceptance criteria. Note: this test is regarded as destructive to specimens.
Keywords: connectors for electronic equipment, solderless wrapped connections, un‑wrapping test, IEC 60512-16-13, mechanical tests on contacts and terminations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Objective: Verify that a wrapped connection can be un-wrapped without causing breakage or imminent failure of the wrapping wire.
- Specimen preparation:
- Use a wrap post with a wrapped connection as defined in the applicable detail specification; pre-conditioning (if required) must be applied.
- Geometrical, metallurgical and surface finish details of post and wire, tooling and application details are essential when specified.
- Test equipment and setup:
- Mount the wrap post so it can be freely rotated about its axis.
- Provide a means (manual or otherwise) to keep the wrapping wire under a small but adequate tension that does not add twist or stress.
- Procedure:
- Carefully un-wrap by rotating the post while keeping the wire tensioned so the wire is substantially straightened.
- Measurements and acceptance:
- Conduct a visual examination per IEC 60512-1-1 before testing; specimens must be free of defects that would invalidate the test.
- During testing, the wire shall be substantially straightened without breaking.
- Record any areas of damage that do not immediately break the wire but indicate imminent failure.
- Note: small notches or indentations from wrapping are normal and expected.
- Documentation:
- Detail any preconditioning, specimen specifics, number of specimens, and deviations from the standard test method in the detail specification.
Applications and users
- Practical use cases:
- Qualification and routine testing of connector wrap posts and solderless wrapped connections in electronic assemblies.
- Failure analysis where wrap integrity after installation or service life is questioned.
- Quality control during connector design, production and incoming inspection.
- Typical users:
- Connector and component manufacturers
- Test laboratories and third‑party certification bodies
- Design and reliability engineers, procurement and quality assurance teams
- Standards writers and compliance officers
