Packaging - Rigid plastic containers - PET finish 30/25 Low (16,8)

This document specifies the dimensions and requirements of the 30 mm low screw finish with three (3) thread starts for flat waters and non carbonated beverages.  This finish can be used for aseptic filling and filling with introduction of nitrogen. The dimension (16,8) is the height in millimetres from the top of finish to the bottom of the support ledge.  This finish is designed to take a tamper evident plastic closure only. During first opening, the tamper evident band will separate from the closure shell and stay on a one way bottle neck or like bottles in the returnable market, the tamper evident band will tear but will remain connected to the closure shell.

Overview

SIST EN 16065:2012 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the dimensions and requirements for the PET finish 30/25 Low (16,8) used in rigid plastic containers. This standard focuses on a 30 mm low screw finish with three thread starts spaced 120° apart, designed primarily for flat waters and non-carbonated beverages. The finish height is precisely 16.8 mm, measured from the top of the finish to the bottom of the support ledge. It is intended specifically for tamper evident plastic closures and supports aseptic filling processes as well as nitrogen flushing.

The PET finish ensures product safety through features like the tamper evident band, which separates upon first opening, providing clear evidence of any bottle tampering. This standard helps packaging manufacturers and bottlers achieve consistency, reliability, and compatibility across production lines and markets in Europe.

Key Topics

  • Dimensions and Geometry

    • Detailed specifications for a 30 mm low screw finish with 3 thread starts
    • Thread lead: 9 mm travel per turn
    • Critical tolerances including ±0.13 mm for radii and maximum flash of 0.13 mm
    • Height of finish at 16.8 mm from finish top to support ledge bottom
    • Smooth, defect-free sealing surfaces to prevent leakage
  • Tamper Evident Design

    • Finish engineered to accommodate plastic closures with tamper evident bands
    • Band stays attached to closure shell after opening for one-way bottle necks or returnable bottles
    • Band either separates cleanly or tears but remains connected
  • Functional Requirements

    • Compatibility with aseptic filling and nitrogen-flushed beverages
    • Requirements for sealing surfaces, thread alignment, and mould seam tolerances
    • Prevention of overhang between finish diameter dimensions ensuring closure fitment stability
  • Material and Weight

    • Specified weight on height (3.73 g) with a density of 1.335 for the finish itself

Applications

  • Beverage Packaging

    • Ideal for non-carbonated and flat water bottles requiring secure sealing
    • Used extensively in aseptic filling lines to maintain sterility and shelf life
    • Suitable for products requiring nitrogen flushing to extend freshness
  • Returnable and One-Way Bottles

    • Designed to function with tamper evident closures that signal first opening
    • Supports both disposable and reusable packaging markets
  • Quality Control in Bottling

    • Standardization enables control over bottle finish quality for leak prevention and closure performance
    • Useful for beverage manufacturers, closure designers, and filling line engineers aiming for compatibility and regulatory compliance

Related Standards

  • CEN/TC 261 Packaging Standards
    • EN 16065 complements other CEN standards related to plastic containers and closures within the packaging sector
  • CE.T.I.E. Data Sheet GME 30.22
    • The technical basis for EN 16065 specifications, widely recognized in bottling and packaging industries
  • Bottle and Closure Standards
    • Integrates with standards addressing container dimensions, closure types, and sealing performance to form a comprehensive packaging system

Adhering to SIST EN 16065:2012 ensures industry best practices in manufacturing PET bottle finishes that guarantee safety, tamper evidence, and compatibility with aseptic and nitrogen-filled beverage packaging - key factors for maintaining product quality and consumer confidence.
