Overview

EN 3545-002:2008 - part of the Aerospace series published by CEN - defines the performance specification and contact arrangements for rectangular electrical connectors with sealed and non‑sealed rears, plastic housings and locking devices for operating temperatures from −55 °C to 175 °C. It is a companion document to EN 3545-001 (technical specification) and is intended for aerospace electrical interconnection systems used in harsh environments.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Conditions common to rectangular connectors with sealed/non‑sealed rear, plastic housing and locking device for −55 °C to 175 °C.
  • Environmental requirements:
    • Operating temperature range: −55 °C to 175 °C (connector limits also constrained by contact product standards).
    • Climatic tests: continuous damp heat 56 days, salt mist 48 hours.
  • Electrical performance:
    • Insulation resistance at ambient: 5 000 MΩ.
    • Withstand voltage (sea level): 1 500 V r.m.s. for listed contact sizes.
    • Permissible nominal currents are specified per contact and conductor size (see Table 2). Examples: size 22 ≈ 5 A, size 12 ≈ 23 A, size 10 ≈ 33 A (subject to derating per EN 2591-209).
  • Mechanical performance:
    • Mechanical endurance: 100 mating/unmating cycles.
    • Tightening torques: mounting nut 0.125–0.150 daN·m, locking screw 0.06–0.10 daN·m.
  • Contact arrangements:
    • Multiple standardized pin layouts (arrangements 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 12, 13, 16) for mixed contact sizes (examples: Arrangement 01 = 50 × size 20; Arrangement 02 = 78 × size 22; Arrangement 03 = 39 × size 22 + 10 × size 16).
  • Polarization / coding:
    • “Codable” polarization via male/female attachment systems with six orientation positions; indexing marks and tooling per EN 3545-008.
  • Cabling and tooling:
    • Permissible external wire diameters and conductor sizes are specified; use of cables exceeding maximum diameter is prohibited.
    • Crimping/assembly tooling and removable contact handling referenced to contact product standards and EN 3197.

Applications and users

EN 3545-002:2008 is intended for:

  • Aerospace design engineers and connector manufacturers specifying or producing rectangular flight‑grade connectors.
  • Avionics and aircraft systems integrators, harness designers, maintenance and certification teams.
  • Procurement and quality assurance teams requiring standardized contact arrangements, electrical ratings and environmental performance for aircraft electrical interconnections.

Typical applications include aircraft wiring harnesses, avionics modules, sensors and control systems where high reliability, temperature extremes and environmental sealing are required.

Related standards

  • EN 3545-001 (technical specification) - use together with EN 3545-002
  • Product standards: EN 3545-003, -004, -005, -006, -007, -008
  • Contacts and tests: EN 3155 series, EN 2591-100, EN 2591-209, EN 3197, EN 4529-002

Keywords: EN 3545-002:2008, aerospace connectors, rectangular electrical connectors, sealed rear, plastic housing, contact arrangements, −55 °C to 175 °C, connector performance specification.
