Overview

EN 1912:2004/prA3 (CEN) is a draft amendment to the European standard EN 1912:2004 (Structural timber - Strength classes - Assignment of visual grades and species). Submitted by Technical Committee CEN/TC 124 in November 2008, the prA3 amendment updates the assignment of visual grading rules and commercial species to Euro strength classes for structural timber. The amendment proposes specific changes to the standard’s lookup tables (Tables 1–4 and Annex A.1) and clarifies species identification and grading-rule references.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Assignment of visual strength grades and species to Euro strength classes (conifers and hardwoods).
  • Table updates (summary of prA3 changes):
    • Table 1 (conifers and poplar): deletions and reassignments (e.g., Netherlands grade C removed from C16; some S7 grades moved from C16 to C18); additions such as LS13 (German poplar) → C27 and LS10 & better (German poplar) → C22.
    • Table 2 (hardwoods): additions of TH1 American white oak → D50, TH1 American red oak → D40, TH1 American white ash → D35, and LS10 & better (German ash) → D40.
    • Table 3: Populus nigra added to species identification.
    • Table 4: Fraxinus americana, Fraxinus excelsior, and Quercus alba added to hardwood identification.
    • Table A.1 (Annex A): editorial improvements and explicit references to national grading standards that define the visual grades used in the assignments.
  • Species identification: Botanical identification numbers and the note that only specific poplar clones apply (e.g., Populus x euramericana cv “Robusta”, “Dorskamp”, “I 214”, “I 4551”).
  • Grading rule linkage: Assignments reference national grading rules and standards (e.g., DIN, NF, BS, NGRDL, INSTA) listed in Annex A.1.

Practical applications

  • Selection and specification of structural timber for buildings and civil engineering works where compliance with Euro strength classes is required.
  • Procurement and quality control by timber merchants and importers to ensure that visual grades from different countries map correctly to EN strength classes.
  • Visual grading and certification bodies use the table assignments to justify grade-to-class conversions and to align national grading rules with EN 1912.
  • Structural engineers, designers and building inspectors reference these assignments when checking material conformity to design assumptions (strength class selection, design values).
  • Useful for manufacturers of engineered wood products and for harmonising cross‑border timber trade within Europe.

Related standards and references

  • EN 1912:2004 (base standard) and EN 1912:2004+A2:2008 (prior amendment)
  • National grading standards listed in Annex A.1 (e.g., DIN 4074, NF B 52-001, BS 5756, NGRDL)
  • Eurocode design standards that use timber strength classes for structural calculations
