Overview

EN IEC 61215-1-4:2021/A1:2022 is an amendment (A1) to the IEC/CENELEC standard that defines special testing and documentation requirements for terrestrial thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules based on Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 (commonly referred to as CIGS). It complements the IEC 61215 series for design qualification and type approval by addressing technology-specific issues for thin‑film CIGS modules and was adopted by CENELEC in 2022.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and status
    • Amendment A1 modifies EN IEC 61215-1-4:2021 without altering core intent; published by CENELEC and IEC TC 82.
  • Technology focus
    • Special requirements apply to thin‑film Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 (CIGS) photovoltaic modules.
  • Marking and documentation
    • Modules must include clear nameplate markings; new items for reduced mechanical load modules are required.
    • Required phrasing for reduced-load modules (example):
"Reduced mechanical design load: ± 800 Pa. Not for roof mount. For ground mounted installations with restricted access only. May only be used in systems designed by a licensed professional engineer."
    • Type/model designations for reduced-load modules must include a unique identifier (e.g., suffix “-X”).
  • Reduced mechanical load concept
    • Defines a reduced mechanical load module (test load < 2 400 Pa).
    • Documentation must explain intended engineered-use scenarios (e.g., ground‑mounted utility‑scale systems with restricted access) and limitations (not for rooftop use).
  • Static mechanical load test (MQT 16)
    • Modifies minimum test loads: modules without special marking retain a minimum test load of 2 400 Pa (design load 1 600 Pa).
    • Modules with the “reduced design load” marking may be tested at a lower minimum test load of 1 200 Pa (design load 800 Pa), with a safety factor of 1.5 referenced in documentation.
  • Terminology and access
    • Introduces terms such as “reduced mechanical load module” and “restricted access area” to clarify installation and safety conditions.

Applications and users

  • PV module manufacturers developing and certifying CIGS thin‑film products.
  • Independent test laboratories performing IEC 61215 qualification and type‑approval tests.
  • Project engineers, structural and electrical designers specifying modules for ground‑mounted utility‑scale arrays.
  • Certification bodies, regulators, and compliance teams ensuring correct marking, documentation, and safe use restrictions (e.g., not for rooftop installations).
  • Installers and EPC contractors assessing suitability of reduced-load modules for site‑specific engineered systems.

Related standards

  • EN IEC 61215-1:2021 and EN IEC 61215-2:2021 (referenced for general test flow and procedures)

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publicat
