Overview
SIST EN 73:2020+A1:2024 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies an evaporative ageing procedure for wood and wood-based products treated with preservatives before they undergo biological testing. This accelerated ageing method simulates the volatilization and loss of wood preservatives under controlled laboratory conditions, reflecting real-world exposure and helping to assess the durability of the treated wood.
The procedure is applicable not only to treated wood but also to untreated, modified wood, and wood-based panels, whether preservative-treated or not. The standard ensures consistent pre-conditioning of test specimens, which is critical for reliable biological testing outcomes.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
- Applies to wood and wood-based products as test specimens before biological testing.
- Includes treated, untreated, modified, and panel wood products.
Evaporative Ageing Principle
- Specimens are exposed to a controlled, dust-free airflow at a defined temperature (40 ± 2 °C) and velocity (1 ± 0.3 m/s).
- Exposure typically lasts 12 weeks to mimic preservative volatilization.
- During ageing, specimens are rotated periodically to ensure uniform evaporation.
Test Specimen Preparation
- Specimens must be prepared and conditioned according to relevant biological testing standards.
- The ageing procedure should begin within three months of specimen preparation.
- Specimens can be stored at (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 5) % relative humidity before and after ageing.
Equipment Requirements
- Use a compartmentalized wind tunnel with heating and air distribution for controlled, uniform ageing conditions.
- Instruments must accurately measure temperature and air velocity.
Procedure Details
- Positioning of specimens to allow optimal airflow without cross-contamination.
- Rotation of specimens through 180° on a horizontal or vertical axis every two weeks to simulate even ageing.
- Guidelines for handling multiple specimens within compartments.
Reporting and Documentation
- Biological test reports must reference this standard, specifying exposure duration, storage conditions, and any deviations.
- The ageing period and timing relative to biological testing must be documented to ensure traceability.
Applications
Wood Durability Testing
- Accelerates the ageing of preservative-treated wood to anticipate long-term performance under biological stress.
- Supports the evaluation of wood preservatives’ effectiveness against fungi, insects, and other degrading organisms.
Quality Control and Product Development
- Ensures wood products meet durability standards before market release.
- Assists manufacturers in improving preservative formulations through reproducible ageing conditions.
Compliance and Certification
- Provides a harmonized method for European timber standards compliance.
- Facilitates certification and regulatory approval by providing standardized ageing protocols.
Research and Innovation
- Used in forestry, wood science research, and development of novel wood modification techniques.
- Enables comparative testing of various wood treatments, including untreated and modified wood.
