Abstract

This standard specifies a method of testing the fire resistance of fire resistance or fire-proof electrical cables inside a harness.
The objective of this test is to qualify these cables when they are confined inside harnesses defined hereafter. Described configurations try to be representative of various cables configuration installed in Aircraft.
It shall be used together with EN 3475-100.

SIST EN 3475-417:2009 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 3475-417:2009, a CEN European Standard for aerospace electrical cables. Prepared by ASD-STAN and approved by CEN, it specifies a test method for assessing the fire resistance of fire-resistant or fire-proof cables when they are confined inside an aircraft-style harness, and it is used together with EN 3475-100.

What does SIST EN 3475-417:2009 specify?

SIST EN 3475-417:2009 specifies a fire-resistance test for electrical cables used in aircraft when those cables are installed inside a harness. The method is intended to qualify cable constructions in harness configurations that are representative of aircraft installation practice.

The document is organized into six clauses and one normative annex:

PartWhat it covers
Clause 1Scope
Clause 2Normative references
Clause 3Preparation of specimens
Clause 4Apparatus
Clause 5Method
Clause 6Requirements/Acceptance criteria
Annex A (normative)Circuit diagram principle for measurement of equipotentials

The standard explicitly says it shall be used together with EN 3475-100. In practice, that means this part gives the special fire-and-harness test, while the general rules come from the companion part.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 3475-417:2009?

Clause 3 requires three specimens per configuration, each 0.75 m long. That gives repeatable results and makes the test suitable for qualification rather than a one-off demonstration.

Clause 4 ties the apparatus to EN 3475-408 and ISO 2685. The burner, test fixture, flame conditions, heat flux, and vibration characteristics are controlled so that the test setup matches the intended fire-zone exposure on aircraft.

Specimen configuration

Clause 5.1 uses three homogeneous harness configurations unless the product standard says otherwise: codes 002, 006, and 020. These correspond to different conductor sizes, so the test covers more than one harness build-up.

The harness is built from three-core cable EN2346-xxxCyyy and assembled as groups of cables connected in series. The sample is twisted with a defined lay length and mounted on a frame, with a load taken from Table 1. In practice, this means the sample has to be built and restrained as a real harness, not as loose cable.

Fire and vibration exposure

Clause 5.2 requires the test to run without fluid immersion. Each sample is exposed to flame and vibration together for 5 minutes, then vibration continues for another 10 minutes after the flame is removed.

That sequence matters because it checks whether the cable keeps its electrical function not only during heating, but also during the period after direct flame exposure when mechanical damage can still grow.

Electrical monitoring and acceptance

Clause 5.2 requires insulation resistance to be measured simultaneously between equipotential 1/2 and equipotential 3/4. Annex A gives the circuit diagram principle used for that measurement.

Clause 6 requires electrical continuity and insulation resistance to be checked during the test. The minimum insulation resistance is 10 000 Ω unless the product standard states otherwise. For a reader, this is the pass-fail basis: the harness has to remain electrically usable while exposed to the defined fire and vibration sequence.

Who uses SIST EN 3475-417:2009?

This standard is used by aerospace cable manufacturers, harness assemblers, and test laboratories that qualify cables for aircraft use. It is also used by quality, engineering, and procurement teams that need a defined test method for fire-resistant or fire-proof cables inside harnesses.

In practice, users apply it when they need to set up a qualification test, compare cable constructions, or verify that a harness design meets the required fire-resistance behavior under combined thermal and vibration stress.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 3475-417:2009?

  • EN 2346-002 - defines the fire-resistant cable family used to build the test harnesses.
  • EN 3475-100 - provides the general test-method rules that this part must be used with.
  • EN 3475-408 - supplies the apparatus basis and the fire-resistance test framework referenced for this method.
  • ISO 2685 - provides the aircraft fire-zone environmental test procedure and burner guidance used as an apparatus reference.

What does the SIST EN 3475-417:2009 document contain?

The document contains a short test method focused on specimen preparation, apparatus, procedure, and acceptance criteria. It also includes a harness schematic in Figure 1 and a load table for the three harness sizes used in the method.

Annex A adds the circuit diagram principle for measuring the equipotential pairs during the test. That annex supports simultaneous electrical monitoring while the sample is under flame and vibration, which is the practical core of this standard.
