Overview
EN 1910:2016 (CEN) specifies a laboratory method to determine the dimensional stability and warp of elements used in wood flooring, wood panelling and wood cladding. The standard defines conditioning climates, specimen preparation, measuring equipment and procedures to quantify dimensional change, moisture content and defects such as cup, bow, spring and twist. Results are reported as percentage changes relative to an initial standard climate.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Test method for dimensional changes and warp of delivered elements (flooring, panelling, cladding).
- Conditioning climates:
- Climate A: (65 ± 5) % RH at (20 ± 2) °C
- Climate B: (50 ± 5) % RH at (23 ± 2) °C
- Stabilizing room conditions include dry (30 % RH) and humid (75 % or 85 % RH) climates at 20 °C or 23 °C.
- Specimens: Elements are tested in delivered form. End sealing rules:
2000 mm: no end sealing
- 1000–2000 mm: one end sealed
- ≤ 1000 mm: both ends sealed
- Minimum reduced element length: 250 mm
- Measurements:
- Mass (scales accurate to 0.1 %)
- Geometrical dimensions per EN 13647
- Warp components: cup, bow, spring (EN 13647 definitions) and twist
- Twist measurement uses a dial gauge (0.01 mm resolution) and a reference plane; twist is expressed as Twist (%) = 100 · Z / L (Z = measured gap minus thickness; L = element length).
- Procedure:
- Initial conditioning in Climate A or B
- Humid exposure (4 weeks or until mass change ≤ 0.1 % in 24 h)
- Dry exposure (4 weeks or until mass change ≤ 0.1 %)
- Oven drying at (103 ± 2) °C to determine oven-dry mass
- Moisture content: Determined by oven-dry method (EN 13183‑1) or by electrical resistance (EN 13183‑2). Note: electrical method less accurate below ~6 % MC.
Applications and users
EN 1910:2016 is used by:
- Test laboratories and QA teams performing performance testing of wood flooring, interior panelling and exterior cladding
- Manufacturers validating product stability and developing specifications
- Architects, specifiers and contractors assessing material suitability for environments with varying humidity
- Regulatory bodies and procurement teams requiring standardized test evidence for compliance or tender evaluation
Practical uses include product development, quality control, failure analysis, and supporting installation guidance to reduce dimensional defects in service.
