Overview

EN 1534:2020 (CEN) - "Wood flooring and parquet - Determination of resistance to indentation - Test method" specifies a standardized procedure to measure the resistance to indentation of wood flooring and parquet. The method uses a hardened steel spherical indenter (Brinell-type) and reports results as Brinell hardness (HB, N/mm²), including statistical evaluation and a characteristic (5th percentile) value for conformity and product comparison.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Test method for resistance to indentation of wood flooring and parquet elements.
  • Apparatus
    • Hardened steel spherical indenter, contact diameter (10 ± 0.01) mm.
    • Measurement rig able to measure residual indentation diameter to ±0.1 mm (note: d1/d2 measured to ±0.2 mm).
    • Loading head with load cell accuracy ±2% and adjustable load/rate.
  • Test specimens & sampling
    • Specimens may be elements or square pieces (preferred side ≈ 50 mm).
    • Minimum number of indentations depends on element length (examples):
      • ≤ 200 mm: 1 indentation per element; minimum 60 elements
      • 201–500 mm: 2 per element; minimum 30 elements
      • 501–1 000 mm: 4 per element; minimum 15 elements
      • 1 001–2 000 mm: 6 per element; minimum 10 elements
      • 2 001 mm: 10 per element; minimum 6 elements

    • Indentations ≥20 mm from edges/knot; if width <40 mm place on longitudinal axis.
  • Conditioning: Specimens conditioned at (65 ± 5)% RH and (20 ± 2) °C before testing.
  • Test procedure
    • Apply indenter: increase load so 1 kN is reached after (15 ± 3) s, maintain for (25 ± 5) s, then withdraw.
    • Let specimen recover for at least 3 minutes, then measure two residual diameters at right angles: d1 (along grain) and d2 (across grain).
    • Compute mean indentation d = (d1 + d2)/2.
  • Calculation
    • Brinell hardness HB computed from applied force F, ball diameter D and residual indentation d (standard Brinell formula).
    • Report mean m, standard deviation s; characteristic value (5th percentile) X = m − t05·s using Student t coefficient according to number of indentations.
  • Reporting: Laboratory and client details, sampling, specimen description, conditioning, apparatus, individual results, mean, s and characteristic value, and any deviations.

Applications and users

  • Useful for: flooring manufacturers, independent testing laboratories, product certification bodies, specifiers, architects, procurement teams and quality control for:
    • Comparing hardness of wood species and floor systems
    • Product development, acceptance testing and conformity assessment
    • Selecting species/finishes for durability and indentation resistance
