Rubber and plastics hoses - Determination of abrasion of lining (ISO 7662:1988)
Specifies a method for determining the abrasion of a hose lining when a certain amount of specified grit is passed through the hose. The method is applicable to rubber and plastics hoses with an internal bore of 20 to 50 mm used for grit blasting, shot blasting and similar operation. The method may be used for comparison of the abrasion resistance of different types of hose.

Overview
EN ISO 7662:1996 (ISO 7662:1988) specifies a laboratory method for determining the abrasion of the internal lining of rubber and plastics hoses used in grit blasting, shot blasting and similar operations. The standard measures lining wear by passing a defined amount of abrasive grit through a hose sample and quantifying material loss. It is intended for hoses with an internal bore of 20–50 mm and is intended for comparative testing of abrasion resistance, not for setting absolute maximum-wear specifications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope: Lining abrasion determination for rubber and plastics hoses (bore 20–50 mm).
- Test specimen: Hose length 1 000 mm ± 50 mm.
- Abrasive (grit): Cast iron grit, 0.7–0.9 mm particle size, 58–60 HRC Rockwell hardness. Other grits allowed only if documented in the test report.
- Grit flow: 42 g/s ± 2 g/s at an air pressure of 250 kPa ± 25 kPa; cabinet contains 25 kg of circulate-able grit.
- Nozzle/ejector: Hard-metal blasting nozzle, internal diameter 10 mm ± 1 mm, cylindrical length 50–100 mm; nozzle inserted 25–50 mm into test piece with centreline alignment within 1°.
- Mounting and geometry: Test piece mounted vertically; bend radius r = 6 × nominal bore; fixture ensures nozzle–hose parallelism.
- Test duration: 400 min ± 1 min blasting.
- Measurements: Mass measured to 0.1 g before and after test; volume loss ΔV calculated from mass change and lining density (expressed in cm³).
- Reporting: Include hose description (lining density), reference to EN ISO 7662, grit type, grit flow, air pressure, test time, loss of volume, observations and test date.
- Comparability: Tests must use the same hose type/size and the same grit; results from different grit types are not comparable.
Applications and users
- Hose manufacturers: validate and compare lining compounds and constructions for abrasion resistance.
- Quality control and inspection labs: routine comparative testing and batch verification for blast-hose products.
- R&D and material suppliers: development and selection of abrasion-resistant elastomers and linings.
- Procurement and specifiers: assess relative performance of hoses intended for abrasive services (grit/shot blasting).
- Test houses: standardized method for delivering consistent, reproducible abrasion data.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through IS0 technical committees. Each member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the IS0 Council. They are approved in accordance with IS0 procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard IS0 7662 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 45,
Rubber and rubber products.
