Overview

EN IEC 61300-2-6:2024 (based on IEC 61300-2-6:2023) specifies a standardized tensile-strength test for the coupling mechanism of fibre‑optic connectors and connector/device combinations. The standard verifies that the mechanical latching or coupling mechanism withstands axial loads likely in normal service and that optical performance (attenuation, return loss) remains within specified limits during and after the test. This is the third edition (technical revision) and supersedes the 2010 edition.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Confirm mechanical integrity of connector coupling mechanisms under axial (separating) loads while monitoring optical performance.
  • Test apparatus: Requirements for a controlled tensile test setup, including:
    • Force generator capable of applying a smooth, controlled axial load at a specified rate.
    • Force gauge for accurate measurement of applied axial force.
    • Clamping device and DUT (device under test) mount to secure connector pairs or connector-to-device assemblies.
    • Monitoring optical cable and instrumentation for live optical monitoring.
  • Procedure steps: Defined sequence including preconditioning, preparation of DUT, initial visual and optical measurements, mounting, application of load, recovery, and final examinations and measurements.
  • Optical monitoring: Addition in this edition - active monitoring of change in attenuation and return loss during tensile loading to ensure optical performance remains within spec.
  • Severity and reporting: Guidance on severity values (test force/time) and mandatory details to specify and report in test records (test configuration, force profile, environmental conditions, pre/post measurements).
  • Normative references: Test relies on general guidance from IEC 61300-1 and related examination procedures (IEC 61300-3-1, IEC 61300-3-3).

Applications and users

This standard is essential for organizations involved in the design, manufacture, selection and qualification of fibre‑optic interconnecting devices:

  • Connector and passive component manufacturers validating connector latch strength and durability.
  • Test laboratories performing standardized qualification and acceptance testing.
  • OEMs and equipment manufacturers ensuring device receptacles and cable interfaces meet service loads.
  • Telecom, datacom and hyperscale operators specifying requirements for procurement and acceptance testing.
  • Quality assurance and R&D teams using repeatable, internationally recognized methods for product validation.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
