Alarm systems - Intrusion and hold-up systems -- Part 2-7-1: Intrusion detectors - Glass break detectors (acoustic)

This European Standard is for passive acoustic glass break detectors installed in buildings and provides for security Grades 1 to 4 (see EN 50131-1), specific or non-specific wired or wire-free detectors, and uses environmental classes I to IV (see EN 50130-5). This European Standard does not include requirements for passive acoustic glass break detectors intended for use outdoors. A detector shall fulfil all the requirements of the specified Grade. Functions additional to the mandatory functions specified in this standard may be included in the detector, providing they do not adversely influence the correct operation of the mandatory functions. This European Standard does not apply to system interconnections.

Alarmanlagen - Einbruch- und Überfallmeldeanlagen -- Teil 2-7-1: Einbruchmelder - Glasbruchmelder (Akustisch)

Overview

EN 50131-2-7-1:2012/A1:2013 (CENELEC) is the European amendment for acoustic glass break detectors used in alarm systems - part of the EN 50131 family for intrusion and hold‑up systems. The amendment (A1) updates test methods, immunity and environmental requirements and clarifies manufacturer information (for example, directional sensitivity). This standard is applied for product evaluation, type testing and national adoption across CENElec members.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Acoustic glass‑break (bris de glace) intrusion detectors used in alarm systems.
  • Detection test environment: Passive acoustic detectors require an enclosed, draught‑free test area sized at least 15% longer than the claimed range in the long dimension and at least half that long dimension for the short dimension (example: 10 m claimed range → min. long = 11.5 m; short = 5.75 m). Window mounting location rules specify window centre must be 15–40% of wall length from either side.
  • Directional sensitivity: Manufacturers should indicate if a detector is directionally sensitive; if so, related requirements apply.
  • Immunity tests:
    • Small objects hitting glass - test height changed from 1.0 m to 1.80 m.
    • Hard objects via pendulum - pendulum connection must be a cotton string < 3 mm; single-hit tests without repeated bouncing.
    • Single‑frequency sound sources - sound level references updated from 80 dBA to 80 dB.
    • Wide‑band noise using flat steel rulers - detailed ruler specifications and test procedures added:
      • Short: 200 mm, cross‑section 13 × 0.4 mm, approx. 0.01 kg
      • Midsize: 300 mm, cross‑section 30 × 1 mm, approx. 0.06 kg
      • Long: 500 mm, cross‑section 30 × 1 mm, approx. 0.1 kg
    • Masking detection and environmental classification tables were renumbered and clarified (masking range materials, operational and endurance tests).
  • Documentation: Amendment details and compliance dates are specified for national adoption.

Applications and who uses the standard

  • Manufacturers of acoustic glass break detectors - for product design, internal validation and to ensure compliance with CENELEC test methods.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform standardized immunity, environmental and operational testing for product certification.
  • System integrators and security specifiers - to select compliant detectors and understand performance limits, range and installation constraints.
  • Procurement officers and regulatory bodies - to specify compliant components for commercial and residential intrusion alarm installations.

Related standards

  • EN 50131 series (intrusion and hold‑up systems) - this document is Part 2‑7‑1 within that family.
  • CENELEC/CENELEC member national implementations of EN 50131.

Its full title is "Alarm systems - Intrusion and hold-up systems -- Part 2-7-1: Intrusion detectors - Glass break detectors (acoustic)". This standard covers: This European Standard is for passive acoustic glass break detectors installed in buildings and provides for security Grades 1 to 4 (see EN 50131-1), specific or non-specific wired or wire-free detectors, and uses environmental classes I to IV (see EN 50130-5).
