Alarm systems - Intrusion and hold-up systems -- Part 2-6: Opening contacts (magnetic)

This European Standard provides for security grades 1 to 4, (see EN 50131-1) specific or non-specific wired or wire-free opening contacts (magnetic), and includes the requirements for four environmental classes covering applications in internal and outdoor locations as specified in EN 50130-5. A detector shall fulfil all the requirements of the specified grade. Functions additional to the mandatory functions specified in this European Standard may be included in the detector, providing they do not influence the correct operation of the mandatory functions. The two separate parts of the opening contact (magnetic) shall be referred to in the body of this European Standard as the detector. This European Standard does not apply to system interconnections.

Overview

EN 50131-2-6:2008/IS1:2014 is the CLC/CENELEC European interpretation and supplement for magnetic opening contacts used in intrusion and hold‑up alarm systems. The standard addresses both specific and non‑specific, wired or wire‑free opening contacts and defines how detectors (the two separate parts of the magnetic contact) must meet the requirements of the assigned security grade. Environmental classifications follow the profiles in EN 50130‑5, covering internal and outdoor applications.

Key points in scope:

  • Applies to security grades 1 to 4 (see EN 50131‑1 for grading definitions)
  • Covers both wired and wire‑free magnetic opening contacts (detectors)
  • Includes requirements for four environmental classes to reflect indoor and outdoor use
  • Does not apply to system interconnections
  • Allows additional non‑mandatory functions so long as mandatory function performance is unaffected

Key Topics

  • Detector requirements and grading: A magnetic opening contact must fulfil all requirements of the specified security grade. This ensures consistent performance across installations classified by risk level.

  • Environmental classes: The standard mandates testing and suitability for four environmental classes aligned with EN 50130‑5, supporting selections for internal, external or mixed‑use locations.

  • Test methods and interference magnets (Annex A): Annex A defines the dimensions and magnetic parameters for standardized interference test magnets used during reproducible testing. An Interpretation Sheet (IS1) permits the use of a NeoDym (NdFeB) test magnet in place of the AlNiCo magnet for stable, reproducible results. The normative test magnet parameters include material NdFeB N40 with specified remanence and energy product values (remanence Bmin ≈ 1 275 mT ±2 %, BH ≈ 310 kJ/m³ ±3 %, polarization of working point ≈ 0,835 T ±2 %).

  • Calibration and test houses: The standard recommends calibration of test magnets by accredited test houses and cites standards such as EN/IEC 60404 series for magnetic measurements.

Applications

This standard is essential for manufacturers, test houses, integrators and security specifiers involved in:

  • Door, window and perimeter intrusion detection using magnetic contacts
  • Product development and type‑approval testing of opening contact detectors
  • Selection of sensors for indoor and outdoor alarm installations where defined environmental and security grades are required

Related Standards

  • EN 50131‑1 - System overview and requirements for alarm systems (security grading reference)
  • EN 50130‑5 - Environmental test methods and classification for alarm systems
  • EN/IEC 60404 series - Magnetic materials measurement and calibration methods

Practical value: EN 50131‑2‑6:2008/IS1:2014 provides a clear framework to ensure magnetic opening contacts perform reliably across security grades and environments, and it prescribes reproducible test practices (including the accepted test magnet parameters) to support consistent certification and deployment.
