Overview

EN ISO 9261:2010 - Agricultural irrigation equipment: Emitters and emitting pipe - Specification and test methods (ISO 9261:2004) is the CEN-adopted European version of the ISO standard covering mechanical and functional requirements and conformity test methods for drip irrigation components. It applies to emitters, emitting (drip/trickling) pipes, hoses (including collapsible “tapes”) and tubing whose emitting units are integral, and to dedicated fittings. The standard covers emitters with or without pressure regulation and limits outlet flow rates to 24 l/h per outlet (except during flushing). It does not apply to porous pipe nor to pipe performance regarding clogging.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope & definitions: clear terminology for in-line/on-line emitters, multiple outlets, regulated (pressure-compensating) vs unregulated emitters, reusable vs non-reusable pipes.
  • Classification: by reusability, pressure regulation type and low-pressure behaviour.
  • Designation, marking & packaging: manufacturer marking and packaging information needed for correct identification, installation and operation.
  • Construction & materials: dimensional and material requirements for pipes, emitters and fittings.
  • Test methods and performance requirements:
    • Uniformity of flow rate and emitter/exiting unit distribution
    • Flow rate as a function of inlet pressure; determination of emitter exponent
    • Dimensional checks
    • Resistance to hydraulic pressure, tension and pull-out (fittings and emitters)
    • Watertightness of emitter–pipe assemblies
    • Environmental stress-cracking resistance for polyethylene (PE) emitting pipe
  • Manufacturer data: required information to be supplied for correct field use (minimum/maximum working pressure, flow rates, installation instructions).

Applications and Who Uses This Standard

EN ISO 9261:2010 is used by:

  • Emitters and irrigation pipe manufacturers for product design, quality control and labeling.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies to verify conformity with mechanical and hydraulic requirements.
  • Irrigation system designers, consultants and contractors who specify components for drip and trickle irrigation projects.
  • Procurement teams and specifiers in agriculture, landscape and greenhouse sectors seeking standardized performance data.
  • R&D teams developing pressure-compensating emitters, drip tapes and fittings.

Practical benefits include improved selection of emitters and pipes, consistent product performance, safer installations, and clearer manufacturer information for field operation.

Related Standards

  • ISO 3501 - tests for assembled joints between fittings and PE pressure pipes (resistance to pull-out).
  • ISO 8796 - methods for susceptibility of PE pipes to environmental stress cracking (revisions referenced).

ISO 9261:2004(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9261 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 23, Tractors and machinery for agriculture and
forestry, Subcommittee SC 18, Irrigation and drainage equipment and systems.
This second edition of ISO 9261 cancels and replaces ISO 9261:1991 and ISO 9260:1991, of which it
constitutes a technical revision.

The article discusses ISO 9261:2004, which provides specifications and test methods for agricultural irrigation emitters and emitting pipes. It outlines mechanical and functional requirements and includes information on testing conformity with these requirements. The standard also specifies the data that manufacturers must provide to ensure proper installation and operation in the field. It applies to different types of emitters, pipes, hoses, and fittings used in agricultural irrigation, with specific limitations on flow rates. However, it does not cover porous pipes or the performance of pipes in relation to clogging.
